A Gem in the Somerset Countryside: The George Inn, Croscombe
Nestled near the charming village of Croscombe, just a stone's throw from Wells, The George Inn is a true haven for those seeking a quintessential English pub experience. Read moreI stayed here for 2 nights over a weekend as I was going to the Harvest Celebration at the Newt.|I received a very warm welcome from a very helpful lady who led me to my room - one thing to mention is that the pub is VERY dog friendly and there was a definite doggy smell in my room and bathroom, but the rooms were clean and a quick spray round with my perfume and leaving the window open while I went out for the afternoon helped. |The other thing to mention is that I got back quite late (around 8pm) and parking was a big problem. There is parking for around 3 cars in front of the pub and an overflow car park just down the road, but that only has space for another couple of cars depending on how everyone parks, and as I was there Friday and Saturday everywhere was packed. However I managed to find somewhere to park on a housing estate up the road.|Although on a busy road, the room was cosy, and the bed was so comfortable and I was so tired from lots of walking and lovely fresh Somerset air, I had a good night's sleep. | The TV remote control didn't work but I didn't think this was worth complaining about so I just operated the TV manually.|I would give this a 5 but there were in my opinion a couple of niggles.|It wouldn't stop me recommending the...
Read moreWe booked a table of 8 for my boyfriends birthday dinner as it had really good ratings online. When we arrived we weren't shown to our table and we weren't brought menus for a good 15 minutes until we asked for them to be brought over. The service was fairly poor. No water offered for the table, no offer for drink refills and the waitresses didn't lay the table for our mains and were quite blunt about the complaints. The food wasn't great - camembert was hard and uncooked, the garlic mushrooms were swimming in sauce, the 'pre-baked' baguettes weren't baked and the mussels were cold, gritty and unwashed. The steaks were very small and cooked medium instead of rare with frozen vegetables, the chips were very bad, not like any I've tried before and the burgers were burnt with wilted salad and 3 onion rings (that would've cost £.3.50 as a side!) We decided not to have puddings as it was such a disappointment considering how good the reviews are on Google and Trip Advisor. The sweet potato fries were good and restaurant was well kept but there were no other people so a bit of music would have made the atmosphere better. Overall, way too expensive for the quality of the food and service was lacking. Won't be...
