Where to start. When we told people we were having our wedding reception at a pub, we got some mixed looks. But the Golden Lion in Stithians isn't 'just a pub.'
Nestled into some beautifully kept tiered gardens, decorated with bunting and lights, and overlooking Stithians Lake, it is the perfect setting for a celebration and scenery for some incredible photos day and night.
The interior has a quaint blend of cosy, cottage-esqe warmth with the fireplace and stone walls leading to a modern, fresh dinning area, well lit by the incredible panoramic view across the gardens and lake (a stunning backdrop to our bride and groom table).
The food was all delicious, many of our guests saying it was the best nut roast they'd ever had. The golden lion even have their own veg patch, taking locally sourced to another level. Emma even grew us some pumpkins herself when she found out we were struggling to find some. An incredible surprise.
We stayed the week in their adjoing cottage. To say we didn't want to leave is an understatement. Again the perfect blend of cosy cottage, but well lit (natural light), modern luxuries and a stunning fireplace for when the nights are more chilly. There is a lovely morning view from the upstairs of the sunrise over the lake.
Emma and the team were fantastic both on the day and leading up to it, with Emma having to deal with all our questions, requests and changes throughtout the year.
As an added bonus we had the delight of being ferried from our ceremony to reception in a 1934 BSA vintage car, owned by Dave (Emma's husband). Dave is so lovely and you can tell he is so proud of getting this fantastic car up and running, having been passed down to him from his father. It was also great to hear the history of the car and about all the little (and not so little) bits Dave has had to do to fix the car and get it into the beautiful condition its in. Thankyou again for helping us make our day even...
Read moreI wasn't going to bother with a review, but feel it has to be done. Firstly we came here 5 years ago and it's was amazing. The staff, atmosphere and the food where fabulous! Unfortunately coming back today we didn't have the same experience. We are a family of 5 and wanted to have a nice meal out as we had cooked every night of our holiday. On arrival we walked in to a very quiet restaurant/pub. We where then told to pick a table as we had booked to eat outside but it was starting to get a little chilly. We then got handed 5 menu's all of which were not what we had seen online(menu changed 4 days ago) the young lad that served us was timid and honestly out of his depth.(nothing personal) .we had to ask for kids menus as they were not given. Once we had ordered the food came promptly. My wife and I had the steak £25 each. They where awful and was told that there had been issues with the steak all day with several complaints (why still serve them)? From my point of view they had been cooked and reheated for order. I can cook a decent steak so know what to expect. I've never sent food back in my life(I'm 42) but this really did warrant me to do so. I was then offered a chicken dish which I accepted this was just as bad. I did manage to speak to someone who I believe was a manager who didn't offer anything but apologies and excuses some of which were laughable! it was just a bad cow! I mean come on show some respect! All in all the best thing was my lads burger and chips which was £8 bargain!! I leave my review as it was just poor all the way round and then to have a bill £110 and be asked which tip level we wanted to leave on the card machine. We will not be going there again for food but if you want a nice pint in a beautiful setting then it's a...
Read moreWe have been to the golden lion on numerous occasions for many years but never experienced what we did today!
We met with friends this evening, accompanied by their 2 children and our 2 children. When we walked in our friends were already seated, I sat our children down (they all started to play uno) went to the bar where the lady serving started to tut and constantly give evil stares at our table.
When I said we’re leaving I feel very uncomfortable here she said ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you over the noise’ ( yet somehow still knew my order) now I would be the first to tell my children off if they were being a nuscience or too loud but they really were not, I was actually thinking they were doing very well being out together as they hadn’t seen each other in a while and especially as one can become very loud due to autism and being partially deaf, (when she does this we always leave the room and go outside so she can calm down, and to not upset other people)
I for one have definitely encountered louder adults (especially at pubs). She was most unwelcoming! And I felt extremely awkward being here. I have never had this experience here in the past!
However, we then went down the road to the halfway house where we spent a few hundred pounds and had a wonderful welcoming experience, with one lady commenting on how well behaved the children were! So I guess it’s a loss to them!
A lot of people like child free locations and this place is perfect! but for families i would...
