Well what a delightful, welcoming pub this was for a weekend break with my friend. A super warm welcome from the manager, good sense of humour, a spotlessly clean bedroom and bathroom and a dining environment that was fun, inviting and enjoyable. Arriving Friday afternoon after a 3 hr drive and a walk around the absolutely stunning Stourhead NT lake and gardens, check-in at the bar was genuine and friendly. A helping hand was offered with our bags and fresh milk in a flask and a delicious, warm homemade cookie a nice added touch. I hate UHT milk pots/sachets!
The chickpea group have clearly thought about their rooms, facilties, customer service and the small things which made this a home from home. Quality toiletries, including lovely bath salts which I enjoyed both nights, sanitary items discretely in the bathroom for emergencies, cotton pads and buds. The bath tub was spotless (a rarity in my experience) and plenty of fresh towels.
Top marks for having a lighter summer duvet on, feather pillows and bottled water at the bedside.
Breakfast (see menu pic) was a delightful selection of freshly baked croissants (not from a packet), fresh fruit pots, ginger and turmeric shots, nice orange juice not UHT, Greek yogurt, fruit, local honey and granola, cereals. Cooked options available, excellent quality, proper butchers bacon and sausage and fluffy, seasoned scrambled eggs with golden yolks. Tea and coffee made freshly and all served with a smile by the lovely Phoebe who took care of us for brekkie and two dinners.
Candlelit dinner tables, a nice menu, we thoroughly enjoyed both evening meals with a glass of wine. Attentive service without being intrusive, any slight adjustment accommodated by the kitchen with ease. A delightful experience and roaring barside open fire and good vibe soundtrack. Two dining rooms plus a few tables by the bar/fire. The music could be heard in my room (2) but it was promptly turned off at 11pm and only on again at 8.30am for breakfast. It didn't disturb me at all.
Local leaflets in the entrance lobby with a corner shop opposite. A few car park spaces in a small car park next to the pub garden which we completely missed but we parked easily on the road outside the church.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it was well worth the almost 3 hr drive for a short weekend break. Thank you team and I'm looking forward...
Read moreAlas, my experience was not good. A very intransigent sales manger would not alter/postpone/refund our booking despite a major accident befalling me a week before our planned 2 night stay. So, with broken ribs and great discomfort we made the trip Most hotels would be more sympathetic and pragmatic than this Despite polite attention there was plenty about which to complain including a noisy, poorly ventilated bedroom which, surprisingly, was not made up on our days there The only stairs were very steep and ill lit- most unsuitable for older people There was no immediate car park Attention at breakfast was sparse Dinner and drinks were expensive Subsequently, following my review, I received the most aggressive of correspondence from the Managing Director of The Chickpea Group of Inns, an amalgamation of Wiltshire based inns We would not stay here again or at any of the other inns within the group You will appreciate from the Managing Director's reply how aggressive he is. His facts are wrong, we were never rude to his staff and every criticism was absolutely accurate and irrefutable Surely at a decent hotel one would expect the bedroom to be "made up" on each day? That's just one of several complaints If, supposedly, his staff were disquieted (for which I'd very much like to hear the proof) it is a pity that he didn't give his ill-gotten gains to them instead of some charity I doubt, with such an attitude, his business will flourish The Managing Director has failed to tell me of any one incident when we were supposedly rude, nor has he told me what charity he used and how much he donated I even phoned the hotel in search of the inferences of rudeness. The staff could...
Read moreI always hesitate to leave glowing reviews to establishments that are beyond normal expectations as the secret will be out.....and I may not find a vacancy next time passing through; and there will be a next time. Very convenient motoring up country from Cornwall I stayed one night midweek dined and breakfasted. Everything was perfect, this is not your impersonal micro plastic pot of UHT style of place. Top quality tea and excellent coffee pleased this very fussy old bloke. The food was excellent. Beyond the practical details however, what really makes a traveller feel welcome is the personal touch. My hostess courteously escorted this pensioner to his room after offering to help with my luggage and the waitstaff were exceptionally attentive. I found the people working here to be personally engaging and professionally discrete. The frontage afforded space to park my motorcycle which i could keep an eye on from my window. The Grosvenor is a Jewel, but shush! don't...
