At 7.15pm we had asked at the bar whether there was a table for 4 that we could book, and were encouraged to do so, though we had been warned that there was a large table booked so could we have a drink in the bar first, absolutely fine. An hour later, still in the bar, after having to listen to very loud rock music and watching a dog wee against the piano, we were taken into the much nicer dining room. There were 3 tables already seated but all were quite small covers, and we were aware of the larger group upstairs. Even though 4 staff were serving, it took 15 minutes for a waitress to come to the table, offering to take our order except we still hadn't even been given menus or offered drinks! Another wait. Finally having our order taken at 8.30pm (all 4 of which were some form of fish and chips) we waited, and waited, and waited. As did one of the other tables near us. Checking with the waitress a couple of times she said "oh we've got a big table so it'll be a while longer" but didn't offer anything to tide us over as we sat for the next hour, still waiting, even after the food had gone through to the big table upstairs. Upon asking her again, she said it would be maximum 5-10 minutes, so we waited for that time again, by which point it was nearly 10pm and we decided to leave without eating. Equally the other table also hadn't eaten, and they'd ordered both starters and mains. I get that sometimes kitchens have disasters, but the bit that was most disappointing was the fact that when telling the lead waitress we were leaving there was not one word of apology, she just seemed annoyed along with her younger waitresses pulling faces at each other behind her and then she still felt the need to present the bill for our drinks (most of which were soft!!). If there had been any word as to why there had been an issue tonight, or any attempt at apologising for the enormously long wait, I'd have totally understood. However, to encourage us to join a table in a near empty pub, and then not provide any food for nearly 3 hours is completely unacceptable and we would definitely not...

We discovered this pub/restaurant as we were driving back to the A38 from Mount Edgcumbe House on Sunday 6th August. We had been unfortunate in not being able to eat elsewhere due to the crowds attending the Classic Car Rally. What a treat we were in for. From the moment we arrived the staff were so welcoming and our waitress Lowenna was beyond incredible. We decided to sit in the beer garden high up behind the pub and Lowenna made the trip up to us about every 10 minutes to check on our needs. She was an absolute pleasure to have look after us as she was genuinely kind and caring and she made every single possible effort to ensure we were happy, comfortable and had everything we needed to eat, drink, visit the toilet and enjoy the location. The food was excellent. We chose a three course meal and were thrilled with the presentation and quality of everything we ate. It was delicious, hot, well prepared and had a wide variety of choice for two vegetarians. We were both surprised and impressed at the vegetarian and vegan choices on offer. Our chefs Chloe & Jago are to be commended as is the owner and the other wonderful server Niamh, who took payment at the end. The whole experience was 100% perfect and we would recommend this place to anyone. The pub itself is on several levels and whilst it appears small in some spaces, actually has a large capacity. When we left it was extremely busy in the bar, but don't let that put you off. The food, staff and the venue were all perfect and the toilet was spotless. Well done to the team working here. We had low expectations to start with but this was not one of those pubs lost in time, it is ahead of its game and greatly...

The Halfway House is a place of individuality, character and hospitality where we enjoyed generous breakfasts and really good dinners. Our room was comfortable (and not over the bar), with a modern en suite bathroom. The only downside would be for people with limited mobility as access to guest rooms is up a steep flight of stairs. Kirsty, Lloyd and their staff are friendly and helpful and the pub bar is lively with lots going on, there is also a small lounge. Outside there is a bar and big tables and benches for the better weather in a big garden set amongst trees. The Halfway House has improved immensely since we lived in Polbathic 50 years ago, Kirsty and Lloyd have plans to make it even better. There is limited on road parking outside and a village car park diagonally across the junction. For electric car users, it's worth knowing that, just a few miles en route to the west country at Buckfastleigh is Strawberry Fields, just off the A38 a multiple rapid points charging station.

Absolutely fantastic food! The staff were wonderful at every point and we couldn’t have asked to be more looked after. The menu is diverse and offers lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their meals and we hope to be back for many many more. Thank you!
