Helzephron, Gunwallow, nr Helston. Cornwall.

Decided to have Sunday Lunch.

Having been told by another local publican that they did not recommend it, and that the Helzephron have a high staff turn over. Both slightly worrying.

I decided that we should make up our own mind.

Initial impression was that the staff need serious training, drinks were given but no indication of a tab, or scanning a card. More later.

I had booked a table for two adults at 12:45 and noted we had two small dogs. (Advertised as dog friendly) We where told table 8, but not given directions. Finding table 8, it was at the side of a door, as the meal progressed this became increasingly problematic. Each time the door was opened, every few minutes the blast of air blew serviettes and dust across our table. When the door was left open it was less problematic, after a while our dogs ( under the table became restless and began resenting the constant disruption)

No menu, no staff attending despite a male 'staff' wandering around aimlessly. A larger table next to ours filled for their booking at 13:15 having cought the bar staffs eye, a menu appeared.

Eventually a male staff member turned up, and took an order from the newly filled next table with whom we had shared our menu.

I indicated that I needed attention, he said he would come back. Didn't return.

I eventually snagged a female member of staff to take an order for starters and mains. When the arrived, they were dumped on the table with cutlery wrapped in serviettes that were stuck together.

Admittedly the garlic mushrooms were OK, freshly cooked but not particularly garlicky, hardly any garlic on the garlic bread, but pleasent enough.

Time passed, the next tables main arrived......

The door opened, closed, opened etc. Left open, closed etc etc. Each movement blowing us with a blast that dislodged lose items.

The pots cleared and main 'Sunday roast ' arrived, meat, Yorkshire, toasties with a dribble of gravy. With a selection of washed out looking vegitables on separate plates.

We presumed that we would be offered condiments and expected perhaps a gravy jug. Nothing arrived. Since the meal was cooling rapidly in the onshore air current, we decided to start.

Despite looking the part, the Yorkshire pudding was dry and hard as papermashie. The gravy tasted fine, but was in such short supply that the whole meal was dry.

The beef, adequate in amount but needed tenderising.

Initially when ordering the starter and main we were considering a sweet from the menu boards.

After waiting and waiting, we decided to go elsewhere for icecream.

I then could not get attention from staff to pay the bill. I got close to walking out, but being fair, I persisted. And eventually paid the bill. I quietly expressed how unimpressed I was, tongue tied with...!!! If this had been a budget 'Skeggness mass produced' lunch at a budget price, the lack of service and quality would be relivent and priced accordingly.

However, Two Garlic mushroom starters, two Roasts one pint of beer and a pint of Cola worked out at £69 and some oddment, almost £70.

As a regular visitor (several weeks per year) to the area who eats out, I Certainly have no intention of eating at the Helzephron until the service and local reputation improves dramatically.

I first stayed at and regularly used the Helzephron when I was in the RN Based at HMS Seahawk /RNAS Culdrose between 1981 and 1985.

Returned on numerous occasions over the decades, it has been a few years, pandemic etc. Since I have been.

It is an ancient building with interesting historical features and a once admirable reputation. Let us hope that it works towards it's previous excellence and survival.

Oh, for visitors of the English East Coast, Skegness and other East coast towns. There are many excellent pubs/eateries that currently can provide a brilliant Sunday carvery for about £10 a head. Sufficient that no starter needed, and enough to take your pet doggy a little home. 3 people including a drink each for a fraction over £40...

Fabulous sunsets here. Very pretty views further down below the pub...patchwork quilts full of fields hedgerows beautiful rugged hills and scenery all around quintessentially Cornish. Gunwalloe and Church Cove down below. A sweet little church to visit.

It truly is a paradise, both in and out of season. Both when the sun shines and especially out of season when really quiet and not so busy. Farming land all around here.

There's a sizeable Golf course in the area behind with the glittering sea as a back drop. Gets a little windy sometimes but plenty of tables inside. In summer advisable to book a table to eat as it does get packed and the food is very popular. Straight onto a very pretty peaceful countryside lane,so take care when exiting and entering the pub as some traffic inevitably shoots by so be careful with very young children.

The little wild birds occasionally peck at the crumbs when eating outside and are fun to watch. Thankfully not many seagulls flock here. The sparrows are quite tame. Glorious sunsets, it's a sun trap in summer and very pleasant to eat outside. Limited tables though . Small carpark.

The pub itself is a classic very old oak beamed gem. Open fireplace in winter. Cisy cushions. Full of history, character, good food reasonably priced, though a full 3-4 courses will set you back a little. Friendly staff on the whole, charming youngsters serving in season. Dogs and walkers are very welcome here. Good for all ages really, though predominantly adults and slightly older children frequent it with their families most if whom out of season, live locally.

A good all rounder really and an oasis at the end if a busy working or busy touring day. When its out of season the peace and silence is wonderful to escape the crowds that visit. I would highly recommend it.

Nothing to fault really apart from a bit of a ling wait for food at busy times. But well worth it and your patience will be well rewarded. Serves simple cream teas aswell. The owner is a polite and quite friendly reserved gentleman. If you are looking for youth orientated entertaiinment such as noisy snooker tables, slot machines, loud sky sports and or loud screaming then this isn't the...

I live locally and this has been one of my go to places when friends come to stay for good food and friendly service, that was up to 13th August this year when I visited with my wife and 10 members of the over eighties golf club.

Two of our group had the vegetarian option of Mac and Cheese and Nut roast, both were very happy one had scampi and was also satisfied, the rest of us ordered the roast, eight had beef and one had chicken, everyone who had the beef found the meat to tough to eat, you could not cut it with a knife, one had the chicken which he said was dry and inedible, we passed these comments on to the waitress but were ignored, all the meat dishes went back to the kitchen with the meat still on them, we ordered 3 cups of tea at £2 each expecting to get 3 individual small pots (standard in most places), instead we got one pot between the three with barely one cup each, you could argue, that's what we paid for, but really?

Because we are a group of people in the twilight of our lives we tend to let these things wash over us and continued to enjoy each others company. Two days later my wife was looking at our bank account and noticed the bill, I had paid by card and stupidly had not realised the amount, my wife younger than me at 82 is more astute, she asked if I still had the receipt which I did and when she checked it found that it was not itemised, just a total and the total seemed extremely high, she phoned the restaurant and told them what we had ordered and asked how much it should have cost, they said that it should have been £16.95 less than we had paid but as we had left it for two days there was nothing they would do.

Fortunately the poor service bad food and overpricing did not spoil our day, as we were in the company of “good, honest people with integrity”, no Halzephron I don't include you or your team in that quote.

In summary, if you want a basic vegetarian meal with an expensive cuppa and don't mind being ripped of, then this is the...

Wow, what can I say .... After needing late night emergency accommodation, we made the call to this pub with a brief explanation and got a room about 9.30pm. On arrival Claire was expecting us and very quickly got us a much needed drink, she was very fast to ask if we had eaten, we hadn't and she offered us food (obviously not served at this time) she said she would "just knock us up some sandwiches!!! They were amazing and far more than just "sandwiches." The hospitality offed was just non-stop, heart felt, and so caring that we had everything needed. The rooms are fantastic with everything needed an amazing cornish biscuits 😋. We were asked what time we would like breakfast and agreed to 8/8.30. Unfortunately, we were very late down due to dealing with the AA ! My partner popped down and explained, and David simply said, " Please don't worry. Just come whenever you are ready." We didn't get down till 10.30, and both Claire & David were so accommodating we just expected maybe coffee and toast at this time.... No no No we got the works !! Full English beautifully cooked and presented by David and amazing coffee from Claire! They organised us onwards transport and gave us a very happy fair well goodbye. You have to visit this amazing quirky old pub, the service, welcome, and food in more than 100 percent! The view of the sea and outside areas are also perfect 👌 Thank you guys for your exceptionally kind hospitality 😊

(Google is only providing a hotel-based review option, but e didn't stay.) We booked for Sunday lunch to fit into our coast walking plans. We arrived early but they were able to accommodate us. They were definitely busy, but not full. It was a lovely warm September day so the outdoor tables in the sunshine were full. The service was friendly and pretty quick. We both had the Sunday roast. I've not seen/eaten a roast dinner that enormous outside of Chrismas Day. It was very substantial, but also very well cooked. My beef was plentiful and tender. My partner's nut roast was tasty and moist (and he's had a few nut roasts in his time). The plate was covered in protein-of-choice, roasties, Cauli cheese, plentiful gravy, and a large Yorkshire pud. We both got a side plate of veg that might normally do 2 people. Fortunately we love veg too. Again, it was well cooked, not overdone, just boiled/steamed, but a good mix of cabbage, swede, parsnips, carrots, broccoli and mashed potato/celeriac. The puddings we saw also looked great, but we still had a few miles to cover. Also, nice real ales and a fantastic interior, with fabulous views if you're outside or by a window. (Low beams inside.) Minus 1 star because my main was a bit on the cool side. Not worth sending back though. Veggies were hot and my partners dinner too.
