I'd promised my friend an afternoon tea for her 70th birthday but we had a limited window on Thursday afternoon after 3pm. We discovered that every cafe in the neighbourhood stopped serving food at 3pm and were about to give up in despair when I remembered Silver St. I wasn't optimistic about our chances but the Kitchen on Silver St couldn't have been more helpful. We got a brilliant afternoon tea, served in fine china, with a lace cloth, very generous amount of smoked salmon, ham and cucumber sandwiches, choice of two types of cakes from the many available plus excellent scones, jam and cream and a big pot of good hot tea. We pushed the boat out and added a glass of prosecco but it was still less than £20 per person. A few years ago I took someone to afternoon tea at the Ritz and I can honestly say that it wasn't as good as this (and it was a lot more expensive). The service was great too.
The cafe is open day time and some evenings, offers a good range of food and lovely cakes and is licensed. It's well worth a visit whether a special occasion or just a coffee in town. I'll definitely...
Read moreI had high hopes for this place, having found the menu online, as they were serving exactly what we fancied for a quick lunch. We asked for food to take away, which I appreciate may not be the norm, but it was a total disappointment. The paninis looked like they had been cooked on a filthy griddle, as the bottoms were covered in charcoal/charred food (my husband's is pictured, but mine was worse), and the 'salad' consisted of limp and blackened lettuce. I appreciate it may not be possible to do a proper salad to take away, but then surely it should be left out, and the price should be lowered accordingly. Instead, we paid £17.90 for two paninis with lettuce that looked inedible. We added a side of chips, and these had clearly been either over-cooked, or cooked in dirty oil. Our coffees were served quickly, but the wait for the food was so long (20 minutes or so), that the coffees had then gone cold. All in all, £31+ for the above, felt like...
Read moreOur first visit to this place and I can guarantee it won't be the last!! It's quirky & fun inside, not the biggest place and not over many tables, better for that because you're not rubbing elbows with those sat at the table next to you!! The food was amazing too, an astonishing breakfast selection is available, lunches are tasty, plentiful and very well cooked. As they point out in there....they don't serve fast food, just good food as fast as they can, and the old adage that the best things in life are worth waiting for certainly holds true here!! There is a cake selection too, which is very extensive!! As I've mentioned in other reviews elsewhere in the country.....don't walk past, walk IN, you won't regret it. I would suggest that given the size of the property it does get very busy at times, so if you're looking to do something special I would book well in advance, especially for...
