VERY NICE MIDWEEK LUNCH Stopped here for lunch on our way to visit National Trust's Croft Castle nearby. The pub was quiet when we arrived with only one other table of diners. A smiling young waitress took our drinks orders and handed us menus. Our drinks arrived promptly as we looked through the extensive menu to see what we fancied. I chose smoked salmon with a side salad and a selection of dips from the specials board and my wife was unable to resist trying the fish pie. We settled down with our drinks to wait and we didnt have to wait long. Both meals were accompanied by home made rustic bread and pats of local butter. The bread was delicious. My wife's fish pie was crammed full of smoked fish, hake, salmon and king prawns with a nicely browned topping of creamy mashed potato. She said it was lovely and moist and I thoroughly enjoyed my smoked salmon with the rustic bread and all tbe dips. When she came to clear our plates, our smiling waitress offered to bring the pudding board and of course we gave into temptation. I opted for mixed ice cream from a good choice of flavours and my wife had a banoffee sundae which she declared to be 11 out of 10!!!!! In the meantime the pub was now full inside as the weather was looking a little unsettled and everyone wanted to dine indoors. We were very lucky to have arrived before it got busy. We would certainly like to return. The food was very good with generous portions, service from the two young smiling waitresses was excellent and our bill was less than...

I had prawn cocktails which was nice, but they'd left the tomato stalks on which meant they had to picked out of the glass it was served in and the stalks removed before it could be eaten. Which is ok for garnish but when it's in a glass and submerged in the dressing not so great.
We asked for two dairy free roasts in advance. The two items we couldn't have were the Yorkshire Puddings and creamy leeks, no alternative was offered or deduction for the cost of those two basic meals.
The meat and gravy was really nice but the meat was cold. The Yorkshire pudding were burnt and the roast potatoes were hard and tasted odd.
The carrots and greens were nice although if you prefer softer veg you need to ask.
Finally an unsecured, large and heavy bookcase almost collapsed on the table behind us when another diner pushed his chair back to leave the table. I told the waitress and she said (much to my horror) 'it happens all the time' I explained that it was a very dangerous and could seriously injur someone or worse. She said she would let the manager know. I just hope she did.
The outside space is beautiful, lovely if you have pets and children too. There was a bouncy castle assault course and loads of space to run around.
Overall it was expensive and disappointing. A few health & safety issues need addressing and I would fully recommend they review their risk assessments in light of the...
Read moreInitially attracted by the menu and, boy, did it live up to expectation: gorgeous food! I started with parsnip and apple soup, so smooth, so divine, not too sweet, the balance of flavours spot on. My partner had king prawns served warm which were also good. Next for me came Annie's Nut Roast with camembert, served with a little pot of seasoned chips and a jus - and now I've gone to heaven! Most nut roasts are dry, tasteless, and you feel like you've entered a chewing competition in the Olympics; not so this offering, which was moist and not overly nutty, and I take my hat off to Annie for making the boring so lush and tasty. My partner had a much-hankered after Fish Pie: the best he's ever had apparently, and being a connoisseur of such things an accolade to chef. Alas both of us too stuffed for dessert but could I forego that soup next time, for there will definitely be a next time? Reasonably priced for the quality, this is good restaurant food not a burger pit stop. Charming, peaceful ambience inside with a pleasant garden and seating at the rear. Car park at side with disabled spaces closest to pub. Roadside location but not a busy road during lunchtime...
