Went to Tolpuddle Martyrs for a Carvery with some family today. A clean, warm inviting pub with very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. We all ordered the Carvery . The served 2 meats today Pork with herbs and roast beef, a choice of slightly bloody and we'll cooked joints. I had some of each and the server was very generous with the servings to the point that I had to ask him to stop. The veg all looked lovely and I loaded my plate with it all. The Roast potatoes where crunchy on the outside, soft and flavorable on the inside and the best I've ever had. Red, cabbage, not my favorite was gorgeous. The white cabbage, glazed carrots, honey roast parsnips, broccoli and Cauliflower cheese were all cooked nicely and very tasty. The home made gravey was divine. And a nice Yorkshire pudding. Every one at the table complimented the chef on his wonderful food. All plates were cleared and if I wasn't in a public eatery, I would have licked my plate clean. Truly one or if not the best carveries I've had. The staff were attentive and very helpful. The pub was very clean on the inside and open plan. Maneuvering the wheel chair was very easy due to the space inside the pub. They sold a good selection of drinks including Hawkstone and my favorite, Thatchers Zero. This food is very very good and cheap at £16.95 for the amount and quality of the food. I shall be bringing my family here again and very soon. Thankyou all staff at the Martyrs for an excellent experience. Plenty of car park space outside the pub for disabled blue...
Read moreBooked a table for our anniversary because I'd read good things on here, and liked the look of their menu.
Sat down, waited for service to bring us a menu. No menu came. Waiter seemed to be deliberately ignoring us.
I went to the bar, asked the girl if we could have menus, she replied "It's carvery only because it's after six" and immediately walked off before I could question her further. Her tone suggested "carvery only" wasn't really a thing, but they were only doing it because perhaps they were short staffed or couldn't be bothered. She was a bit weird about it, and like I say, immediately walked off.
Their website states that the full menu is available alongside their carvery, so this further backs up my suspicion that carvery-only service isn't really a thing usually.
It's a shame. Their menu sounds good and their website talks as if they're quite proud of their food and service, but I won't ever go back again to try it. You have to question how proud they can really be of their menu, if they can't even be bothered to cook it when doing a carvery.
It all feels a bit like a place that may have once upon a time started well, but is now becoming one of those places that's poorly run where staff have lost their enthusiasm and no one takes pride in anything. I doubt their menu lives up to...
Read moreThe history of this village is fascinating. In 1833, a group of six farm workers from the Dorset village of Tolpuddle were concerned that their wages had been cut, so they formed a trade union to ask for guarantees that their wages wouldn’t be cut any further. Other farm workers wanted to join their trade union, and potential members were asked to swear an oath and pay a fee to join and do the trade union was born although not without controversy. Inside the pub an information board pays homage to the six workers and the endeavours. I visited with my son and I had a ‘light bite’ fish and chips and he had a burger with all the trimmings. The location, food and service were all fabulous and well worth a visit either on your way or returning from nearby Athelhampton House. Highly...
