Liked: The location of the site and the pub itself were excellent. I will leave a separate (very positive) review of the pub and the pub staff - this rating refers only to the campsite itself.
Disliked: We were next to a large party who were extremely verbally abusive and threatening towards me and my friend. We politely asked them to turn their music down (blasting party tunes at max volume) at around 10.30pm. When it got to about 11pm with no signs of the party stopping (everyone else on the site was in bed or quietly chatting) we called the pub and asked if they could pop over and ask them to turn the music off. The guy from the pub came over and told them there had been a complaint and they'd need to turn it down. Unfortunately this very obviously linked back to us and from then on the whole party were verbally abusive and threatening towards us. This continued for over an hour and by this point we were very frightened that they'd damage our car/ tent after we went to bed. The threats were homophobic and violent with really disgusting language in front of all their kids. We ended up having to pack up after midnight and drive to the pub for safety. The pub staff were very kind to us but it turned out the party weren't even all registered with them. We ended up spending the night in the car park. I couldn't in good faith recommend this campsite until they get some better procedures in place. No one was keeping an eye on the campsite for noise levels and they didn't do any checks to see who was actually present there. The way the conflict was dealt with (although very well meaning) seemed to lead to the situation escalating further. I'd recommend for any future noise complaints the staff do a walkround and tell everyone they have to keep the noise down now rather than mentioning specific complaints. They also need a better system for keeping track of guests. They've offered a full refund and were great at accommodating us with somewhere else to stay, so we really...

There were a few beautiful walks straight from the entrance to the campsite, had we stayed for a little longer I would have enjoyed exploring them all.
At only £8 per night, per person, this site is extremely budget friendly.
The field we camped in was laid out in little sections which was pleasant. There was a little privacy between different areas of the field compared to the usual flat, open campsites.
Plenty of natural shade provided by trees and a lovely choice of pitches to choose from.
The New Inn was very easy to find on the outskirts of a quaint little village. The road leading through the Cropton was quiet and we didn’t get much-if any road noise through the night.
Disliked: Whilst I appreciate this is not the site’s fault, and looking at other reviews we were simply unlucky, the site was loud until 1:30am.
There was one large group playing loud music and shouting until the early hours of the morning. When I contacted the pub at a little before 11pm I was told that it was not yet curfew (despite the sign-in papers and website saying quiet hours were 10:30 onwards) and questioned as to whether I had spoken to the group myself. The pub did say however they would send somebody over. Whether anybody did come and check the site or not I do not know, but the site remained loud until the early hours.
My issue with this is not so much that there was a loud group (that could happen anywhere) but rather that the problem was not resolved by management.
The toilet facilities were basic with no dedicated men’s and women’s (which we expected and have no problem with), however the lights didn’t work correctly and they were in desperate need of cleaning and maintenance.
We really wanted to like this site and we were skoping it out with hopes of returning with our children, however I cannot say that I would go back based on...
Read moreWe had a trip planned on the north Yorkshire moors railway and wanted to stay in a country pub. The pictures of the rooms looked great so we booked a room. The room was OK. No better. The decor was old and tired. Trunking down the walls made everything look like there was no care taken with finishing the decoration. The wash basin was lose No doubt from people using it to lever themselves off the very tight toilet. The other issue was wafer thin curtains and a light outside of the room. So the room was lit up all night. |When we went down for dinner it appeared that the management had placed a dog of some sort under every table. I call them trip hazards. The bar was busy and tight. So to have dogs in the way was not ideal when you've just had a hip replacement and your trying to avoid dogs who obviously don't have the awareness to move out of the way. The bar man seemed half asleep. He asked us for our order. We ordered two drinks. He pulled a pint and asked if that was everything? I said no. I asked for a glass of wine. He said OH. Was that large. I said no. Medium. As I've just said. |We asked to go to our table and the lady shot off so quickly we lost her. We followed in the direction she had gone and found her in the restaurant. Wandering around looking bemused. I said are you waiting for us? Table 15. She said oh yes. And then started looking for the numbers on the tables. It really was a strange experience. When we received our meals I was about half way through and I asked for another pint. I was advised to go to the bar. I said I'm half way through my meal. He reiterated that he was serving food and was not there to serve beer. I think that is probably the first time that has ever happened to me in a restaurant. He then reluctantly asked what I wanted. But I felt like I was putting him out so declined his offer. |Breakfast was very nice and the service was freindly and efficient. We didn't see anybody as we left otherwise we would have...
