I visited on the evening of 20 August 2025 and met the new owner and her two lovely front of house staff. A very warm welcome from walking in the door. The atmosphere was delightful, all the home comforts of a country pub but with a slight french bistro twist.

Local ales did not disappoint and the wine list was good.

The food was exceptional. We had the Deviled Seafood Gratin and Smoked Haddock Rarebit to start. Both great. The gratin was light, flavousome and packed with seafood.

The rarebit was amazing. Possibly the best piece of smoked haddock I have eaten as far as I can recall.

To follow was an authentic Provencial Fish Stew and the Confit Duck.

The fish stew was loaded with various fish cuts, king prawn and two types of mussels. The bisque sauce was lightly spiced and well balanced. Served with char grilled sour dough which added a unique smokiness from the char acrylamide.

Eating the confit of duck I could have closed my eyes and been in well to-do restaurant in france. The duck was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. Better than you would find in France, it was nestled on a bed of freshly steamed beans and tenderstem broccoli (not from a tin). A few new potatoes and a lovely fruit compot/sauce on the side made this a wonderful meal.

Very much recomend...

Wow, what a find! We were absolutely delighted to stumble upon this fantastic gastro pub during our holiday. From the moment we walked in, we felt so welcome – the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. We enjoyed it so much that we went back a second time, and both visits were outstanding. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully cooked, and full of flavour. You can really tell that a lot of care and attention goes into everything they serve. The service was spot on too – friendly, efficient, and nothing was ever too much trouble. A special mention has to go to Mel and her wonderful team. They go above and beyond to make sure every guest feels at home, and that really makes all the difference. If you’re anywhere nearby, do yourself a favour and pay a visit. You won’t be disappointed. Truly a gem and one of the...

Very nice main piece of food, I had the pork belly which had a huge head if cracklik on whih was lovley! Its tasted amazing, same for my dads pie, had allot if meat and looked amazing. However the veg and starters seemed forgotten, not well presented and so simple it looked like I could of done it. Not a brilliant selection on beers either but nothing that made me upset or got me feeling like anything wasn't worth what i was paying for. Staff were accommodating to us and our small dog considering it was a Friday night and we didn't book. Childs dish was very big for a child's meal which isn't a complaint, we felt like we really got our money's worth and had something to take home. Overall, have been to better pubs but more certainly have been...

Felt really safe here( in the current Corona virus pandemic). Everything was spotlessly clean, and systems were robustly in place to keep it so, and people socially distanced. The owners were so friendly and welcoming, the service was excellent and the food delicious. The roast beef on Sunday was plentiful and very tender, and great Yorkies.Couldn't fault it. A lovely experience that we repeated again later in the week. We both had the lamb and it did not disappoint! Really tender and tasty. Beautiful well-kept village also.

Lovely lunch visit... Very friendly welcome. Highly recommend the steak and ale pie... Home made by landlord apparently.... Really like the suet pastry, served with gravy, which is a nice touch that too many pubs miss... Oh and great proper chips all served with a nice pint of Palmer's gold.

Wonderful Sunday lunch ..... 3 x Roast Beef & 1 x Roast Pork with lots of veggies and Uber crispy Roasties all washed down with a couple of pints of well-kept Palmers Dorset Gold. Highly recommended, and if not too full after a hearty meal, a bracing walk back to Beaminster. Top stuff 👏
