Perfect stopover for a meal and return needed. We were on our way to Exeter and i was looking for somewhere to stop to break up the journey and ensure we didn't eat to late. We rang on our way to see if we could get a table, found it quite easy and there seems to be a fair few out in the car park now arranged for the ubiquitous social distancing seating. We were shown the dining hall but whilst beautiful we were the only ones, we asked if we could site in the bar area. Partly to save her shuttling back and forth but no doubt more people would be in. But glad we sat in the old bar, menu was vibrant, we were reading about the chef and his take on local sourced produce and showcasing it. We tried the sourdough and mushroom's and their runny scotch egg with mustard. Just so much flavour, seasoned well. This we felt was not going to be a quick stopover. We ordered the local sourced beefburger and bacon, and vegetable wellington. As a meat lover the bacon was not a slice but slabs of generous salty fatty goodness. The burger was delightful not overcooked and dry but moist. Homemade coleslaw and generous fries. My partner enjoyed the wellington lots of tasty vegetables. by now we were hooked and still not electing to leave chose a dessert to share their mini doughnuts and coffee. Not a cheap stopover but such friendly staff and good food, why rush. We knew we get there just later. We looking forward to visiting there in March 2021 when we now stay in Wincanton and can jump in...
Read moreWe came on a recommendation. Tuesday evening, family of 7 including 2 small children. First impression lovely welcoming inn. Then.
The bar staff, one lady, who spent more time absent from the bar than in it. Bearing in mind we were the only customers at this point. 10 minutes to get round of drinks and menues. Enter nice locals, very nice and friendly. 20 mins later placed food orders. Start the clock. 25mins the only 2 starters arrived. Bland flavours, and not feeling freshly cooked. After 55 mins from ordering ( children now well grouchy for their food) i asked the little seen barmaid who said, oh we are really busy. 5 locals, one family mine having food, busy my Fanny Adams. 58 minutes finally arrived. 1 steak hidden under a mushroom. Chips re fried and had been left too long under the heat lamp. 3.ceasar salad literally had been doused in salt.in edible. Burgers unable to chew like rubber. No table seasoning provided and had to be requested 3 times. High chair had to be repeatedly asked for. Staff rude, grumpy, un obliging.
Who knows your next our of season visitors may be brewery representatives, or good pub guide assessors. How ever not us we found another local hostelry and they have shown what south Somerset hospitality really is. A lot of serious problems. Oh ps my job, hospitality trade if...
Read moreWe stopped at The Old Inn for dinner last night after having driven past several times. The 2 young ladies on the bar were very friendly and quickly seated us. The bar area is very cozy, lovely decor and comfortable. It was burger night, so we both chose the beef burgers. It didn’t take long for the burgers to come presentation was really good and everything looked very appealing. Chips perfect, coleslaw very tasty to begin with but the onion became very overpowering (to be honest I can still taste onion this morning) so maybe reduce the onion because it was lovely otherwise. My husband says the same. The burger was steaming hot. Seriously steam rising from the meat when I cut into it. I have never seen that before. One bite and I was thinking what’s that flavour, very odd, neither of us could put our finger on it but not pleasant and the meat was so dense. I’m thinking it was poor quality product. Just minced beef squashed into a patty shape, cook it, so simple would have been the perfect burger. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast so I ate it but I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t so hungry and it wasn’t so late I could have gone home and made something. Sorry we won’t eat there again....
