Went for afternoon tea. It was probably the best afternoon tea I've ever had. Arrived and they had our afternoon tea ready on out on our table. A little cup of warm soup was already on our plate which was homemade and delicious, then a cake stand with sandwiches - and proper sandwich size too (egg mayo, coronation chicken, cheese & pickle and ham salad) and cakes (cookie pie, lemon drizzle & rocky road) and two enormous fruit scones with jam and cream. There was also a warm sausage roll and half a pork pie served with a little pot of Branston pickle and a bowl of lovely crisps. In addition to this, was a cute bottle of strawberry milkshake and we we also had 2 x large pots of tea (coffee available too). The people running the cafe were lovely and very attentive. It cost £16.50 each which I thought was unbelievable value for money. My 16 year old daughter loved it and she's a harsh critic! Definitely avoid the crowds in York City centre and get yourselves to Rufforth for...
Read moreDelightful experience! I usually frequent the stereotypical 'greasy spoon' when on the road and get hungry, just happened to stop here as I was driving past, but thought it would be pricey and not really what I was looking for. Don't take that the wrong way, it's definitely no 'greasy spoon, but I ordered a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea. While waiting I was entertained by the fantastic range of products for sale in the shop, the vast majority of which I would have no idea where else to buy! I loved the place, the staff were great, the food was nothing short of perfectly cooked and even though I'm pretty fussy when it comes to my tea, the tea they produced was spot on! Realistically priced, great service and great food in a refresh got different environment. What's not to...
Read moreA lovely cafe with an attached store. My wife and I stopped by while on vacation from the USA. We enjoyed excellent service and a pleasant atmosphere as we ate a fantastic scone and had tea. The tea room is very pleasant and offers displays about the history of the village, and the Old School, which was founded by philanthropic residents before UK law provided mandatory education to children. Tea is served with an adorable tea set, and epoque slates and chalk are used as placemats and can also be used for doodling. It was a wonderful experience for a couple of Americans to enjoy English hospitality, and a perfect scone with clotted...
