The Old Thatch in Stapehill, Wimborne, Dorset, a 17th century pub which sits directly opposite historic Stapehill Abbey has a very warm and welcoming feel to it, from the roaring fireplace to the friendly smiling staff. My wife and I decided to try this place out as we had heard great things, and we were not disappointed. We had not booked, but the staff found us a lovely cosy corner next the fire. The seating was very comfy and I could have stayed all afternoon. The staff was very attentive and a drinks order placed within a few minutes of sitting down. After a quick study of the menu the waitress brought over the drinks order and took our food order. The starter arrived in good time and it tasted fantastic, fresh and full of flavour, once finished the waitress wasted no time in clearing our plates and again the main course arrive shortly after hot and freshly cooked. The mains were perfect, the pie was great and the vegetables cooked to perfection, crisp and full of colour. The deserts followed and again food heaven. So what does this place score for us. Atmosphere, 5 stars Service, 5 stars Food quality, 5 stars Price, 5 Stars

Been driving past this place for over 38+ years and have never entered!! What a great find.. obviously it's not the same pub as it was so many years ago but just a beautiful set up and a great place to eat as a family, individual, music supplied. Great outdoor area to eat and the inside is tastefully set with period decoration with a modern twist. Great service and attentive staff, the Roast was lovely, gravy nice and hot and tasty and meats cooked lovely the only down side from my perspective was the Yorkshire's were a little over done and hence dry and I like my tatties crispy!! however this was dutifully made up with extra pork crackerlingšŸ’•šŸ„°šŸ’ÆšŸ’• Can't wait to come in an evening to outdoor lights on in a crispy Autum evening supping a beer and eating!! ThankyoušŸ‘

We took some friends from abroad for a dinner at the Old Thatch with our dogs. The location is beautiful, very cosy pub, dogs are welcome and we had a nice table in the corner for more comfort and peace. The food was really good, our friends were impressed about the burgers and the pies. Fish and chips was also fantastic. Prices as average pubs in the area. My only note would be on the service: I rarely met such a blunt and little welcoming waitress. Staff in Mc Donald's or Starbucks are far more smiley, nicer and kinder with their customers. Definitely something that could use some improvement.

I don't make a habit of leaving bad reviews as every establishment has a bad day but i felt compelled to write this one to warn customers who have allergies or special dietary requirements that you should probably choose somewhere else to eat!

Our meal was a total disaster from start to finish. We were a large party, but we did submit a pre-order in advance which included providing the pub with details of two who had allergies/dietary requirements. One adult required gluten-free and the other, my 15-month old daughter, has a milk allergy. For starters, the first of the meals didn't arrive until 1 hour after we sat down and it didn't even all come out at once, we were told that some of the roasts would come later (because there were so many of us) and the pizzas would also come out separately because they were cooked by the outside vendor. Some of the meals ended up coming out 15 mins after the rest (after others had already finished eating). Not acceptable in my opinion because surely when placing a pre-order you've got plenty of notice to make sure everything comes out on time? And to be honest, it wasn't even worth the wait - all the root veg was rock solid and crunchy, not enjoyable at all.

The worst part however was the complete ignorance by the ktichen of the allergen information. The gluten free roast, when questioned, was in fact not gluten free at all, so it had to be sent back. Prior to this, they brought out the kid's roast and said "kid's milk free roast with no yorkshire" as they put it down. BUT 5 mins after serving the kid's roast - and after my daughter had already started eating some of her potatoes - the server came out and asked if the milk-free allergy roast had cauliflower cheese on. After looking under the pile of meat and veg i discovered there was in fact cauliflower cheese hidden underneath!!! I was mortified. I'd called several days in advance of the booking and asked what items of the kid's roast contained milk, i was told "only the yorkshire" which could be removed. And it was. Their menu doesn't even list cauliflower cheese as an accompaniment to the kid's roast so i wouldn't have expected it to be on the plate, regardless of my daughter's allergy so i'm really not sure what it was doing on there. They confirmed they had the details of the allergens on their pre-order sheet and just apologised by saying "the kitchen must not have seen the comments".

Thankfully, my daughter's milk allergy is non-ige so no immediate harm would have come to her (except perhaps several days of digestive issues) but i told the server, "what if she had a severe anaphylactic reaction?!" To someone with a serious allergy, that could have been life threatening. Totally inexcusable and i'm half tempted to report further so that others with severe allergies are not put at risk. With all the recent publicity on allergies with the likes of 'Natasha's Law' etc. i'm honestly dumbfounded that establishments are still not taking allergies seriously. The only reason i've given the extra star is because the refurbishment the pub has undergone with the outdoor play area and 'Bear Island' is fantastic and great to keep the kids entertained and the live music/entertainment is such a nice change from most other places.

But honestly, if you have any kind of allergy or special dietary requirement, please don't even bother considering The Old Thatch as the kitchen places absolutely no importance on the health and safety of...

Really sad experience here, despite having good ones in the past (which is their only justification for 2 stars rather than 1).

Food portions have changed dramatically, essentially halving since eating there just six weeks ago, despite prices going up. Questioned it very politely and jovially with a guy who I thought might be the manager, and who seemed to be a good laugh last time we were there - but was told ''You know how it is at the moment, that's just the way it is I'm afraid! I'll let the chef know your feedback...'' So no apology, no suggestion of compensation, and no effort to replace.

We then sat and waited, without a word, but several nasty looks from that particular member of staff, for the next hour and twenty minutes... at which point we said to our waitress that we might have to cancel and go elsewhere, to which she responded "Well there is a bit of a wait to be fair..."

We weren't told this beforehand and arrived even before the time we had booked for, and there was not even an apology from anyone! At this point we cancelled, but suggested we would potentially pay for our drinks.... WHICH CAME TO £66.00! (there was only four of us!) It was only due to some locals coming and speaking to us, and then taking our bill and going to speak with the "actual" manager, that they then let it go... But still not a single apology, and no attempt to rectify anything (although bizarrely they apologised to the locals!?).

Such a shame as it was good previously. But unfortunately we won't be returning there after that sort of treatment. We don't get to go out often, so this was supposed to be a special occasion for us... but frankly this...

ALWAYS LOVED IT HERE but my 30th PARTY topped it off!! I honestly can't say enough good things about this place! I celebrated my 30th birthday here and from the moment we arrived to the very last drink, everything was perfect. The staff went above and beyond to make the night special – so friendly, professional, and genuinely excited to help us have a great time.

The space was ideal – chill but lively, with just the right vibe for my country themed party. The setup was seamless, the music was on point, and the atmosphere was buzzing in the best way. Everyone in my group commented on how amazing the service was – drinks flowing, food served promptly, and smiles all around.

Speaking of the food: we come every Sunday to this Pub because it is just incredible. Everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented, not your average pub fare.

What really made the night was the attention to detail. Whether it was accommodating special requests, making sure we had enough space, or checking in to see how everything was going, the team genuinely cared. It made me feel like a VIP in the best way possible.

If you're looking for the perfect venue for a birthday or special occasion or even just a Sunday roast! look no further. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to ring in 30 – it was honestly everything I hoped for and more. Thank you to everyone who helped make it so memorable – I’ll be recommending this place to everyone if I haven’t already! šŸŽ‰šŸ» Thank you team love...
