Quite possibly the worst pub experience I’ve ever had. (Sep 2023)For starters, the woman behind the bar could not be any more miserable if she tried-I genuinely think she tried, too. We asked to try a sample of some of the red wines as we wanted to purchase a bottle, and were told that samples were not an option and if we wanted to try any wines, we would have to purchase a bottle. Fair enough, 3 small glasses as samples were purchased. The Sunday roast was average. We finished food, but left 2x half full glasses of wine on the table, a coat on the back of one chair and a hat on the other. Upon returning, the wine was removed along with the hat from the back of the chair. My partner informed the manager and asked for our wine to be returned and we were met with inconvenient stares, and then a thimble of wine as an offering. I then spoke up and voiced that we should at least be given a single pour of wine for the inconvenience, not to mention our glasses of wine being removed from the table. It was also clear that a young bar staff had swiped our hat, but didn’t want to return it. When none of the 3 bar staff admitted they took the hat, I took it upon myself to ask the tables if they had accidentally taken the hat by mistake. Turns out, the young sticky hands behind the bar took the hat and offered it back after I had asked her earlier if she had taken it. Needless to say, it was a shocking experience today, and Ā£80 spent. We’ve been there before and the food was outstanding and the service and management from a male was enough to get us to go back. However, todays experience will go down as one of the worst. You don’t expect young bar staff to steal your items when you nip to the loo, and further whoever is in charge needs to do better. We’re paying guests, and your staff made us feel like an inconvenience simply for walking...

We were lucky enough to be staying close to The Pheasant and as our local decided to check it out. What we found was as absolute treat, he most delicious food in a super friendly pub. So good we went twice.

The food was really very special. Their use of local seasonal was exceptional and we delighted especially in their small plates. Lots of these were mainly exquisite treatment of vegetables. A highlight being the delicious salted cucumber dish. We also enjoyed the most delicious heritage tomatoes with anchovies, garlic and olive oil. I'm sure much more was on this delicious plate but it was eaten so fast we didn't really note. We enjoyed the beautifully cooked sardines which made me feel like I was in Spain.

The main courses didn't disappoint, big shout to the shared sole dish with capers. You must also have the potatoes in brown butter. Naughty but very nice.

We booked in advance but there were a few tables available so you might be able to walk in sometimes. I have no idea why. This place should be sell out every night.

Quality and honest food with solid ethics cooked with love and care. We loved it. Can you tell?

Sorry not many pictures..all was...

Having been in the pub every afternoon for a very good pint of Guiness whilst on holiday decided to have a meal on my last night. I chose the Brixham fish pie and a portion of veg. I have to say the pie was outstanding however the greens were not so good. On check back I told the gentleman serving me that the broccoli tasted sour. He asked if I wanted them replacing however having ate most of the other vegetables I decided not to. He then proceeded to go to the kitchen and a good 10 minutes later came back and said ā€œthe chef has tried the broccoli and it’s okā€. So despite me as diner saying it wasn’t because the chef said it was ok it must be. I have to say having had such a welcome every day I’d been there this was not the response I had expected. It made me a bit disappointed tbh as having known the broccoli wasn’t right my expectations had been brushed aside. Anyway the fish pie was outstanding but I felt I had to write to explain why I thought the broccoli wasn’t that good! I’ll be back in June when I’m on holiday again as atmosphere and beer and main course were outstanding and it was only a niggle of the side order but felt my opinions...

All good. Telephoned in advance and had no problems booking a table. Easy enough to find in the village, looked to be parking behind the pub, but too narrow to get the camper down. we parked on the road outside, luckily it was quiet on the roads, been a Sunday evening. not sure where to park, if more cars around. We were sat at our table quickly, and asked for the food order quickly. took about 10 minutes for the Sunday roasts to arrive (only item served, no starters available). Option were beef, pork, lamb shank and a veggie option. Food ok, not bad size. would have been nice to have a bit more, especially the single parsnip. Beef was tender but fatty. left a fair pile of fat on the side of the plate. plenty of gravy. Most pleasant things were the impressive fish tank, and nice to see the landlords dog free to roam, which was obviously normal, by the locals having dog biscuits in their pockets! price was reasonable, £12 each, so 2 roasts and 2 drinks came to just over £30. overall ok. probably won't got back for a specific visit, but if I'm in the area and hungry, would eat again.
