Food was okay but we were rather uncomfortable as there didn't seem to be much regard to social distancing where we were sitting. I was anxious about people queueing standing to pay by the bar as they were so close to our table with no regard for how close they were to us, and when we asked if we could move we were told to just move round the table ( which we would have done if that had made any difference). Waiting staff left to do something else halfway through taking our order and were in general a little curt with us, which surprised us as we weren't being rude or demanding. We weren't made to feel very welcome which was a shame as we were looking forward to visiting.
Edit: We were situated at a table right by the hand sanitation point and between the bar, so had people coming in the pub right behind us, and people queuing to pay for their meals to the other side of us. There was a lot of footfall and several times I had to lean away from people standing right behind me. I appreciate eat out to help out made staff busy but felt this not...
Read moreGreat real ale country pub with friendly staff and perfect for a visit after Montacute House, can leave car in the car park and walk in 5 mins. The local golden ale was some of the best I've ever had and the service was excellent. Larger fans may be disappointed though with only Amstel and Carling on offer.
We ordered the £13.50 BBQ box to eat in the garden which was a great concept and won't leave you hungry. Sadly the burger wasn't as good as Weatherspoons and I'd never eat a burger like this at my own BBQ, where was the cheese, salad and tomatoes? The so called dirty dog was not like a normal dirty dog, i.e. a hot dog with chili, as there was no bun, but a somewhat salty sausage meat with dry cheese and jalapenos, good effort but not delicious. Would also have been better to have the food served to the table instead of going up to the BBQ, appreciate you may need sauces on every table but not really a big ask. I'd come back in the winter for some epic ale by the great fireplace but can't really recommend the BBQ food too highly unless...

We stopped here on route from Hampshire to Cornwall. Normally stopping on the A303 we decided to find a village close to the 303, here’s where we found the Phelips Arms. What a find. The village is adorable as is the pub. Food and drink is reason enough to head to the pub. This offers this and so much more. The new owners are so welcoming and friendly. It really is a pub for all seasons. We visited in August. Wonderful beer garden, food was fabulous. Good choice of drinks, some nice Gin. They serve a large selection of drinks but my husband being into his beer asked for a recommendation a traditional British Ale, very pleased with what was on offer. It’s a lovely find one we will defiantly revisit. They have 4 guest rooms we will be making use of this in the months to come, ideal for a wonderful...
