What a disappointing Christmas Eve... My wife and I have loved the food at the Plough for the last 4-years (since we discovered this gem) so, during the little window between lockdown and Christmas 2020 we saw online that the Plough was "Taking Bookings for Christmas Dinner Now!" - great! we thought and called and asked for a booking for dinner on Christmas Eve. While the young lady answering the call explained that we would have to park on the road (and could not put wheels on the pavement) and that we would have to use the NHS app for track and trace, she did not ask if we wanted the Christmas dinner nor mention that we needed to specify if we wanted the Christmas menu! My wife and I had already chosen our dishes from the online Christmas menu, and arrived salivating at the thought of what we had to look forward to. When we were shown the menu QR codes on the table, there was no rib of beef, or the other delicious things we were expecting; We were told by our very keen, but very uninformed waitress that we should have pre-booked the Christmas dinner! - I explained that I had called to book for dinner on Christmas Eve (as I was told no food on Christmas Day) but at no time was I asked if I wanted the "Christmas Menu". The website offered no other food details other than the xmas menu details. We received many apologies from the young waitress of course, who, throughout the evening we heard apologise to FOUR more couples at other tables near us that they should have booked their Christmas dinners when they made their booking!! It was clear to us that we weren't the only ones confused by these arrangements. In the end (because it is a bit of a drive for us) we ate the menu de jour... which was surprisingly disappointing... Paying the bill I did ask our waitress how many xmas dinners had been sold tonight - bless her, she lied, saying "A few" :) - Another staff member came to the till and started to explain that "We need pre-orders so the food is fresh" - I replied that while I completely understand that, and totally want my food to be fresh; I was NEVER ASKED on the booking call IF I WANTED THE XMAS DINNER! Going to swerve The Plough - their "backup menu" was not worth the drive from Tavistock. For anyone reading this, our other "Best" menu was at The Rising Sun, also a bit of a drive from Tavi, but we'll give it another try after our latest experience at The Plough at Duloue. Please stay...

This place isn’t good, it’s outstanding!
Mel & Mark used to be the proprietors of the Ancient Mariner in Looe. For those of you who know, or do your research they won a number of awards for their food! Voted for by customers.
Without them, Looe lost out on a great couple, a great chef and great food! As covid set in it was apparent that Looe had forever lost outstanding food!
Then along came the Plough, with new owners in the form of the above aforementioned!
A much larger venue than their last required a number of additional staff. As you walk in you can’t miss their 5 Scores on the doors award! You are then greeted by a sign asking you to wait to be seated. A couple of minutes would have been acceptable for a busy restaurant, however we waited about 10 seconds! The customer service remained high throughout!
The menu was varied with a number of daily specials too. If you can’t find something for everyone in your group I’d be surprised!
The food comes at a decent pace allowing a reasonable time in between courses, but not too long.
The food itself (the main event) is outstanding! Somehow better than that they were producing in Looe (or maybe it’s just because it’s been sooo long).
Is it cheap no, but it’s far from expensive, especially considering the quality. You get what you pay for and more.
There are other places that used to be good, that are now selling substandard quality food at much greater prices.
In summary IF YOU want GREAT food and a good price, with EXCELLENT customer service and in a great setting there is no better place to come!
This is what Looe has been missing since the Ancient Mariner closed!
How long before their first award? It can’t be long in coming!
Some of these reviews make me wonder where people are, or what their...
