I made an enquiry a number of weeks ago about opening times over Christmas advising I wanted to make a booking of 6 for afternoon tea. I was promised a call back within 2 days to let me know as opening times had not been decided at that point. I did not receive the call so had to ring back several days later to follow up my enquiry. I booked afternoon tea for 6 costing just short of £120 which I paid for online immediately after making the booking. Myself and 2 of my guests arrived a few minutes before our allotted time to a very cold cafe, one other table was occupied. We stood at the counter for what seemed an age before someone eventually came through and told us to take a seat. When my other guests arrived the two members of staff started to bring out our tea and food. I asked if one guest could have a different drink as he didn't drink tea and was told I would have to pay for this separately...which I didn't expect after what I'd already paid. The food itself was delicious and plentiful but the atmosphere and overall demeanor of the staff wasn't particularly friendly or welcoming. I am sad to say that overall it wasn't a great experience and I won't...
Read moreOriginal review was "Really nice tearooms - I'll definitely call in again if I'm passing. Lovely food and really cosy atmosphere with very pleasant staff." EDIT reduce from ⭐⭐⭐⭐ to ⭐⭐. The owner has changed since my last vist. Called today and was very disappointed. Walked in and the owner and manager were sat at a table talking. It took 5 minutes before anyone approached. The manager was friendly enough, and directed us to sit at one of the tables. The table had crumbs and jam on it - we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Food served, though expensive, looked okay, until I bit into a shard of plastic (see photo). I couldn't finish meal, and have felt nauseous since. To be fair to cafe they didn't charge for the jacket potato with the shard in it. When I told my wife about today, she told me she visited a few weeks ago and saw the cook enter the toilet wearing the apron 🤮 and wouldn't visit again....
Read moreLovely surprise of a place made from the old Hamsteels Inn pub on Front Street, Quebec, near a play park and the junction to Langley Park and Esh village. Great food and setting. Wish it well. We tried it today - a Sunday afternoon treat for grandma and two girls. Prices are reasonable and whole presentation is unexpectedly top notch. Close to Lanchester and Ushaw, in NW Durham it is a gem. Still a bit rookie service from young staff, but that will improve. Has a child's corner. Come on! new mums and carers, get here on a morning. Fresh food, awesome cakes, supports local producers. And it also appeals as a calm very pleasant tea room to meet friends, this is the spot, with its emerging gift shop as well. Looks wheelchair friendly. Glad Quebec has this new place to meet in. How fab were it one day to become an evening tea room. Well done...
