I don't think the photos online do this little pub justice. The views from the garden across the Tamar valley are fabulous and inside is the quintessential olde world pub. We sat outside as it was a lovely summer's day but I imagine it's a cosy place to sit by the fire in the winter. Didn't eat so can't comment on food but good selection of beers, had a nice pint of Legend and another of Sea Fury. If you happen to arrive by train beware the ENORMOUS, almost-vertical Stony Lane to get back to the station. You'll certainly feel it in your calves!

We headed straight to The Rising Sun for some real local ales (The Legend) recommended by a local was indeed great. The Rising Sun is a 17th century pub with Very friendly staff and in addition to indoor seating there are outdoor blend-into-nature seating options with clean toilets too. Free 🐕 gy beer too for your pets. Car park available. There are some short walking options available taking you to the river in the valley.

Called in today looking for a Sunday Roast and was not disappointed. Great to have local Topside of Beef and lots of vegetables and a big gravy boat and even a pot of cheese sauce! Friendly, helpful staff in a wonderful, proper pub. Will be back again to this place, as it's full of character.

I must start off by saying that after reading the reviews and visiting their website we were rather disappointed......

Our first night in Gunnislake after travelling for a stay with a friend, we had only driven from the top of Devon, but our friend had travelled from Nottingham.

I have done my homework, checked the website and reviews and we had decided to take the dog for a walk and visit the Rising Sun for dinner and drinks.

We walked all the way there, to be greeted with a hand written sign "Kitchen closed today for deep clean, open as usual tomorrow". Severely unimpressed that this wasn't on the website, or the fact that they decided to do this on one of their five serving days, we went in for a drink before our walk back to town in search of food.

The beer was well kept and the chap behind the bar was polite and friendly.

(Now before you defend them for cleaning the kitchen, this is all good and well, but I have ran a pub / restaurant / B&B, where our kitchen was open 7 days a week and we at least would have advertised on our website a set date when the kitchen was closed for cleaning and it was rare we were closed day and night!)

Keeping this in mind after a days walking and lots of ribbing from my girlfriend and our friend about the sign being up again etc, we decided to give it another go.

The young man on the bar didn't really seem to know what he was doing, (not his fault, training required).

We struggled to find something we really fancied, the prices were as high as quality produce but nothing in the menu said it was... Well... I say menu, it was boards above where people were sat so we looked online! We all struggled to choose something that jumped out and made us fancy it.

My girlfriend had Scampi and chips, our friend had Ham, eggs and chips and I chose a steak burger that sounded good, with cheese, pickles and onion rings (all additionally charged.) I had to ask if it came with chips as everything on the menu said what it came with except the burgers?

The ham was nice (a good portion of it too) and the eggs were cooked nice. The Scampi was a good Scampi as far as bought in frozen Scampi goes. The steak burger was really nice, (still pink inside but that's fine by me as I like my steaks rare and it's steak mince) but the cheese wasn't melted fully and the gherkins hadn't been drained so they made the top of the bun soggy and it fell apart as I was eating it.

It was steak night, two steaks and a bottle if wine for £30, which we may have gone for if there had been some traceability on the meat?

I didn't use the facility during our visit (I say this as there is only one tiny loo, but the girls said it was an uncomfortable visit and outdoor loo or not, it could have done with a bit of a clean (and the spider that resided in there was so big he may as well have tipped his hat and offered to flush for them lol).

I think we got hit the hardest like a belly flop into the water after reading the reviews and people bigging this place up.

Sorry Rising Sun, but we did not feel the love your other...

We were visiting Cornwall to deliver our son to a friend's wedding, with no other way for him to get there during a rail strike. It was a very long, wearisome journey - to and fro from Wiltshire. A comfortable watering hole was desperately needed! Thank heavens for google maps, which took us to the Rising Sun. It's clearly a pub that caters to locals, but we were made welcome by everybody there. It's one of those places that is quirky, traditional, and full of character, and we absolutely loved it. The location is hidden away down narrow lanes, but it really is worth searching out. The welcome is warm, and the food and drink are very good. I would return without...

We went there on a whim one Saturday night the carpark is small and rather dark but we persevered and I am total glad we did. I can with all honesty say it was one of the best country pub meals I have ever enjoyed the staff were atentive and knowledgeable. The bar was just busy enough not to feel crowded. The table was a little tight fit but as I am not the smallest of chaps thats the norm for me. The food was presented on nicely walmed plates. I wont go into what each one of our party had but all 4 meals were truley excellent and the deserts were spectacular, I for one would recomend this quirky little country pub. You wont be...
