A beautiful hidden gem in the countryside which we found whilst glamping nearby.
We had a very tasty Sunday lunch here as a family, although the boy decided he wanted the beef burger (which he said was absolutely amazing!) - great portion size, too. Stunning Sunday lunch, where we both enjoyed the beef with a variety of seasonal freshly cooked veggies to choose from - including my fave, cauliflower cheese - and delicious homemade gravy.
The pub itself is old-fashioned, cosy and really does take you back in time; but in a lovely way. It was great to sit at the table and be able tk look up and around at all the history, memorabilia, trinkets, pictures etc dotted around the place. Again, as mentioned previously, it really is a hidden gem in a beautiful little village.
The owner/landlord was very friendly and welcoming upon our arrival & seated us promptly to our table, after taking our drinks order, which we had booked the evening before - I'm so pleased we did because they were fully booked, saying to people who walked in that they were unfortunately unable to accommodate them.
Friendly staff who served us also, polite and attentive when needed. The owner also went out of his way to sort out the broadband/Internet for us as it wasn't connecting - so he went upstairs (I think I heard him say to a member of the bar staff) to reset the hub/router and sorted it all out on his tablet at the bar. We were very grateful as we hadn't brought cash with us and were relying on that "good old" trusty Internet banking, but of course were unable to access it until the lovely owner fixed it for us. Younger one was also pleased to be "connected to technology & wifi" whilst we waited for food 😉
Highly recommend to anyone who is in the area, and definitely book a table ahead! Hope to...
Read moreIts hard to give a pub 5 stars as they change hands often and the quality is often variable but the Royal Oak is an exception. Its been in the same hands (writing in 2018) for many years and I have used the pub regularly for many years for mainly family meals.
The decor isn't the most contemporary or even the cleanest but it does hold a charm. The toilets are dated and could probably benefit from a bit of TLC and investment. The food though, thats always been good to excellent. In over a decade of visits we have never had a bad or even disappointing meal at the Royal Oak. The drinks are always as they should be also.
In terms of pricing the Royal Oak is middle of the road, not the cheapest but still very good value with generous portion sizes. Its also one of an increasingly few rural pubs that is open both for lunch and in the evening. The menu also caters for specific dietry requirements.
Well worth a visit to one of Shropshire's...
Read moreAlot of Shropshire hill walkers stop at this pub as a half way point to eat there sandwiches on the outside seating. In return they buy a drink for using there facilities. After buying a drink I asked out of curtesy whether we could eat our sandwiches sitting down on their outside benches. The female owner said in a rude manner point blank no. It's very quiet there at about 12pm so I can't see it a problem. In fact we were the only customers there. Sometimes there could be upto 30 of us. Next time we will eat our sandwiches in the church grounds using there outside benches and in return put money in there collection box. It's not as though we are carrying a cooker in our back pack to cook gourmet meals to effect your trade and are only there for...
