A couple of weeks ago we called in at The Sally for a bite to eat and a pint after a visit to a nearby garden centre. We had initially wanted a sandwich but were told their lunch menu (including sandwiches) stopped at 4:45 but the evening menu was available. We had actually arrived 10 minutes before, but to an unattended bar and despite it being just 4.45 the chef was unwilling to make us a sandwich. What we had was lovely however.
Yesterday we thought we'd go for lunch and drove 18miles to get there, arriving around 2.20 to be told they'd stopped serving food at 2pm. This was despite their website advertising food service as all day, every day. When we explained we'd driven over especially the barman said he'd ask the chef. The chef refused. Apparently, according to the barman, they decided to stop doing food at 2pm to 'save costs'.
I can understand that in the current climate. What I cannot understand though is why they don't change their website to reflect current food service hours. It shows a complete disregard for customers.
We took our £50 and had a delicious lunch at The Fleece, Ruleholme just a couple of minutes down the road. And that's where we'll be spending our money in future. We will not be going back to The Sally.
EDIT: In response to owners rely...When you advertise food as being served from 12noon onwards, ie, all day, there should not be a need to check on your table booking system. Had we arrived and you were full that would have been disappointing, but you weren't full, you changed your food service hours but not the information on your website to inform customers, which I checked before setting off. Unless of course you consider 31 May to be Winter.

Read moreGrrat place to eat with really good quality dishes. It felt a bit “scheduled” on booking - timetabled quite strictly but the food was so well done that if this kind of schedule means quality service and food then it’s worth it. We enjoyed our evening so much we booked there and then to return. Well worth it and amazingly we just saw the sign casually propped up next to the Hadrian’s Wall hiking path. Without this we wouldn’t have known about it...
To add on from this we did return for our second visit. I was enticed by two particular dishes on the main menu. Sadly “both” were off - strange for the main menu as it was only 19.30. Other diners were being told other starters and mains were also off. I struggled to find another course that I wanted as I don’t eat red meat and the vegetarian option was something I regularly cook at home - which puts me off choosing it as then it doesn’t feel like going out for a special celebration meal, which this was.
I asked about the specials only to be told - they are all off (?!) Added to this was the comment - they sold out “yesterday”... err, what? I thought specials were a daily special option? Later on having a conversation with a lovely chap serving at the counter in the petrol station about this - we decided to go there for our icecream dessert (don’t ask)... he said “isn’t that like soup of the day selling out last week?”. He had a point!
My friend’s starter was excessively peppery and she couldn’t finish. It was advertised as spicy and she is used to spicy so it was certainly a tad OTT even for her.
I finally chose a combination of other dishes and the quality was again excellent. However I have to say we were disappointed in comparison to our...
Read moreWe overnighted here after a long journey north and were absolutely delighted with what we found.||Our room had everything we needed, was well decorated and spotlessly clean. We had a bath and an overhead shower that produced a good pressure stream of water (not as common as it should be).||Downstairs the pub was very busy and having booked a table we were impressed with the wide menu (some pub favourites, a few twists and a list of specials). The food served to other tables looked superb, and we were not disappointed. Good sized portions, superbly cooked, containing local ingredients and amazingly tasty. It’s easy to see why the place was so busy. If you want to eat make sure you book to be assured of a table.||The draft beers on offer included Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, and we were served a pint that had clearly come from a well looked after cellar. There is also a good wine list, we stuck to the beer.||Staying B&B we were offered breakfast choices, and once again the mixture of superb cooking, large portions and quality food set us up for the day.||Special mention should be made of the owner and his team, the friendly and welcoming service enhanced the stay further.||Sadly we are not in the area frequently, but would stay again...
