We were in the area looking for a nice little pub for dinner and a few pints. Fortunately, Google Maps suggested 'The Ship'.
First of all, we are from Germany and go out frequently in Germany (both in the local area and further afield) but also in France and have already been out for a nice meal in England from time to time. We have therefore already had quite a few experiences, some good and some, of course, unfortunately not so good (the latter, fortunately, only rarely).
The ambience is quaint and incredibly cosy, the pub very dog-friendly (many of the guests, local and foreign, had their four-legged friends with them) and the boss and the waitress are both friendly and nice at all times and happy to help with the choice of beer to be enjoyed (in our case) and the selection of homemade dishes from a great selection. The boss and staff are always available for a few kind words and take exemplary care of the guests' physical well-being.
After choosing our dinner (Ethel's Vegan Pie for my best half and the 'Ship's Beef Burger' to tide me over) we waited and had some nice conversations with other guests and each other and then the waitress appeared with simply the best food we both agreed we had ever enjoyed/experienced. Both dishes were perfectly prepared to the point, the meat was wonderfully juicy and the taste was absolutely amazing! With tangy cheese and a sauce you want to be soaked in, in an uber-delicious pretzel roll, it was quite simply the revelation in food. My wife also said the same about her pie, which I can and will absolutely confirm after self-testing - outrageously delicious and a real treat. Finally, I heard the chef recommend the cheesecake (also homemade) as dessert. So I ordered a slice and now unfortunately have to sorely miss this gigantic taste explosion until our next visit. The cheesecake is also unparalleled and is one of the best things I have ever tasted (and there have been some.... ;) ).
Conclusion: 'The Ship' is an absolute MUST if you are travelling anywhere within a radius of at least 50 miles. For us, too, it will be part of every future visit when we return to Good Ol' England. Definitely the best recommendation from us!

Read moreCalled in here today for a late lunch. 1 ploughmans 1 fish and chips.
Well let me say .... the fish was excellent! Flaky fish! Well battered! Well cooked! And im not easily pleased !! Ample chips... and crushed peas rather than the stated mushy peas! But a lovely, well priced, ample portioned meal and plated well !
The Ploughmans was excellent also. Chunky Wiltshire ham , good cheese and partner loved the bread. Even ordered more bread! ( there was ample but he is an Irishman who knows a decent slice when he gets it !)
Do not hesitate to pop in for a meal in my humble opinion! Also saw a burger being served which frankly .. looked fantastic ( seemed a double burger?!)
£29 for the 2 GOOD meals and a lemonade plus fruit juice. £29 Well spent!
Having recently moved from central London to Wiltshire I have to say this is one of the best pub meals we have had.
We are most definitely going back one evening... partner wants a steak !!
Returned here for lunch again today... Absolutely fabulous fish and chips again! Ploughmans fabulous...
Read moreA genuine little village pub , which I am told uses local produce in its kitchen and not the stuff from national supply chains . Sunday lunch menu wasn't huge , but big enough I guess . It's not part of a pub chain churning out preprepared food fast . It's cooked from scratch , so maybe a tiny bit slower than a chain pub. Yorkshire puddings are fantastic and the meal came with just enough veg . Thought the beef was tough , but it wasn't, the knife was just naff. If you are looking for a loud pub , this isn't it , at a guess most there are pretty much regulars who just go to socialise and have a drink. Only real criticism is the gents , soap machines broken and the bottle of soap was empty , so no way of washing hands thoroughly (seems to be a common theme in pubs these days ). All in all pretty good for a lunch , not sure if I'd go there for an evening...
