If you have allergies please read on before dining here. Under previous ownership this pub was once great. Simple food but great. Unfortunately, we booked to visit the shoulder of mutton and were looking forward to our meal after the recent take over by The Brothers Supper. Sadly it was extremely disappointing.
It was a cold evening and we walked in and joined the queued for our table which ended by the door. We were told that our table was the one right next to the door and in the window. It was very cold and we asked if we could shut the door as we were in a draft. Unfortunately, it was so cold we asked if we could move. We were told that they were very busy but we could sit in the corner of the bar area. All of this was not an issue and we could live with this and we moved to the new table.
We then tried on several occasions to order drinks before ordering food. We ordered 1 bottle of wine and half a pint of beer, along with tap water. After about 20 minutes we were brought a bottle of wine, half a pint of beer and 2 extremely dirty glasses for water on a tray with no wine glasses. The lady that served us just put the tray down and said there you go and wandered off but didn’t bring wine glasses. The water glasses were thick in grease and with lip stains all over them. A short while later we had to find a member of staff to ask for wine glasses and asked if they could replace the water glasses for clean glasses. Unfortunately, the wine and new water glasses that turned up were again filthy dirty with lip marks and grease all over, almost like they had not been cleaned. We asked to have them changed again. After about 10 minutes we were brought some glasses that were slightly better and asked if we wanted to order our food. At this point we were there over 40 minutes and had only just managed to get glasses that were slightly clean. We had informed the restaurant that I am celiac before we arrived and have to be aware of cross contamination.
Unfortunately, we decided that it was not worth the risk of eating there as they couldn’t even clean the glasses, so we were not confident that they could ensure the plates were clean. I took the wine back up to the bar unopened and said that I’d just pay for the half a pint of beer that we had had and quietly explained why we wouldn’t be eating to the gentleman behind the bar. The gentleman said sorry we are very busy tonight, but I don’t think that excuses poor cleanliness and hygiene in a professional food establishment.
Sorry, but I’m very disappointed as I was looking forward to dining here and I need to share my experience to ensure everybody with allergies is aware that it would be a huge risk to eat here.
I hope they can turn this around soon but for the time being I could not recommend dining here.
We were looking to use the brothers supper for large corporate events, however we need to be confident that cleanliness, allergies and hygiene are all taken seriously and unfortunately, at the moment, we cannot be confident of this based upon our experience in your establishments.
As a local pub of ours, we would love to see this improve as the menu looked nice and...
Read moreWe booked a table of five in the week, reserved for Sunday lunch. The moment we arrived the apparent chaos sunk in. The staff had no clue we had reserved, even though the pub confirmed the day before, and managed to cobble together a table in the corner, which was a little annoying but fine.
The place was full, with people eating which was a good sign, but suspicious signs lay everywhere of a place that had bitten off more than it could chew. Glasses piled high on the bar, tables left with half eaten plates of food, staff looking stretched or not knowing what to do.
We sat down on the basis that, being in a restaurant we would get some service to the table. An awkward amount of time passed after the member of staff set the table up disappeared, and asked to order some drinks a couple of times before a terrified looking individual came to take our drink orders. Meanwhile whispers of ‘no lamb’ could be heard, ironic being sat in a pub called the Shoulfer of Mutton.
We asked how long food would take from ordering, and 20 minutes was aired as a guess. The atmosphere was strange & tense and I slowly began to feel sorry for the very young staff trying to hold things together. No food order taken we decided to leave after three futile attempts to order. We had received our drinks, didn’t finish them and hung around to pay, but alas the staff were too overwhelmed by the volume of tasks we left without paying, and will continue to contact them tomorrow to settle.
Shame this happened, as we heard good things about the Sunday lunch & have eaten there in the week which has been very nice. Ended up going to the Cock Hotel so our 5 year old could eat, and pleased we did!
The ratings reflect & justified experience. Couldn’t give a zero star for food, as had none.
If the owners don’t know what they’re doing, get some help to get things running smoother. People talk, and sadly this can kill a business. I hope they can implement some changes & thrive in the future, or this was just a really...
