Had a fantastic week staying at the barn at the Star Inn in Porkellis. Andrew and Anthony are really lovely hosts and the Star Inn is fabulous. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff and locals, and the menu was so great we had our evening meal there every night that it was open (Weds to Sun). The barn was comfortable, clean and has everything you could need for self catering, but with the Star Inn only 5 yards away there is really no need to cook. Porkellis is a tiny village away from the busy tourist hot spots, and is a perfectly located central base for exploring South West Cornwall. We highly recommend the barn at the Star Inn and can’t wait to go back to experience the wonderful hospitality once more. Our main tips for future travellers would be: 1. The roads leading to the village are narrow, so definitely follow the instructions that are sent to you for the best route into the village; 2. Book ahead for the evening meals because the Star Inn is unsurprisingly very popular; 3. Cornwall can be very humid so definitely a good idea to use the dehumidifier that is thoughtfully provided by the hosts, we found it especially useful in the bedroom; 4. Be kind to the staff at the Inn, they work really hard and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure that you have everything you need. 5. A week wasn’t long enough to see the many attractions and sights of South West Cornwall, and we didn’t get any ‘rest days’...
Read moreDisappointment doesn't even comes close. My wife and I visited this virtually deserted pub on a Monday night. Shortly into our first pint we were informed that the pub closed at 8.30 so we needed to make sure we finished our beer for then. We had finished our beer by then as it happened, but nobody had said anything to us so we were just finishing off our game of cards when out of nowhere at 8.35 a really angry bloke appeared and demanded we leave his pub. He was rude, aggressive and made my wife cry. ( which she hardly ever does). He kind of implied that we shouldn't have even ventured into the place in the first place because they shut at 8 o'clock (news to us). I took issue with the the rude bloke (presumably the owner) because his attitude was unfriendly, aggressive, and a totally over the top way to handle any kind of customer, let alone a couple of tourists that had gone out of their way to experience a quiet friendly welcoming place to spend an evening. What an absolute tosser. No apology at upsetting my wife, just an aggressive get out of my pub, you're lucky to have got a drink in the first place sort of attitude. So unlike every other experience we've had in Cornwall with the friendly people we've met here. But the owner is clearly not a local, nor interested in any kind of of tourist trade. If I could give it a zero star I would. AVOID...
Read moreWe decided to try and book in here very last minute and Andrew was very good to find us a table close to the time we asked for. Front of house, Anthony and the young barman were incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home immediately offering a really personal service. Between us we ordered a mixture of meals and everything arrived together, piping hot and really well presented. I opted for the seafood platter and it didn't disappoint, the side of skin on chips were a fantastic accompaniment. The atmosphere in the pub was very relaxed yet had the feel of a quality establishment. You clearly manage the amount of guests you have in at once in order to maintain a brilliant quality of service and standard of food. We weren't surprised to hear other guests booking for multiple future visits. Our only disappointment is we didn't discover you sooner in our holiday so we could come again!! So we will definitely be back again on our next visit. Regards Dave, Tara, Finley,...
