This hotel 'could' be wonderful with a good boost of funds. Externally its faded magnificence lets its curb appeal down big time with the pavement in disrepair, peeling paintwork, and overgrown planting. On entry, it's reminiscent of a Scottish hostelry with wooden cladding and tartan carpeting (which could do with a good hoover)! We were warmly greeted by our female host who was genuinely a lovely lady with a bright smile and Pepe who greeted our Sadie Sue. We were shown to our room which was a reasonable size with an en suite you can move around in! A large flat-screen tv with a working remote, kettle with tea, coffee, UHT milk, and sugar. Big bath towels wrapped around all of you and not just your lower half. Hairdryer in the drawer. All lights worked, radiators worked, and hot water was in the larger shower cubicle (quite a lot of mildew on tiles and ceiling despite the extractor fan). The bed was COMFORTABLE thank you, I've left other hotels after one night due to poor mattresses so this was a real treat. The breakfast selection was very good, cereals, juices, toast with jam or honey, yogurts and fruit, AND a full English with fried or scrambled eggs. Even Sadie Sue had a sausage on a silver platter. We had one evening meal a burger and chips and a lasagne. The burger was great but I was disappointed with the lasagne as it was missing the bechamel sauce between layers and a yellow cheese topped it rather than mozzarella which would've crisped up under a grill. The garlic bread was not cooked on both sides and topped with the same yellow cheese not mentioned on the menu and the side salad was just a handful of bistro leaves! It was edible but so aesthetically displeasing. On the whole, we enjoyed our stay and admired the great task in hand that our host couple had, it's a big place with a lot of day-to-day running and large maintenance tasks to handle and no chef or other staff! Thank you for all your effort and for welcoming...
Read moreWe stayed here the weekend the 9th August 2024. Please be warned, photos look nothing like the current state of the venue. Firstly, the location is not the best, a very long, busy road and a hell of a walk to get into any town/village. Secondly, there was one young lady on the bar/check in, there was no warm welcome received, no explanation of our stay, no directions or support with things such as keys or how the doors open (was a challenge) she did not explain when the building locked, as we were planning on going out for drinks and food, to which we would have been locked out, if it wasn’t for us discovering a back entrance way. (we had to figure out for ourselves that you can actually access our room via a back fire door). Leading on to the bedroom, our room was on the bottom floor, practically behind the bar haha, it is very very run down, dirt and liquid splattered all over the walls, mold in the bathroom, no small shower gels etc, no mini fridge, very poor condition. To then make matters worse, whoever was staying directly above us, decided to pull an all nighter, banging around, music and laughing, getting showers at 4am…the list goes on. Safe to say, me nor my boyfriend slept a wink. To make it even worse, we had no idea if there were any staff on site to report this to, as I previously mentioned, the check in was brief and informative. Genuinely disappoint and disheartened as this was a surprise for my boyfriends birthday - safe to say I was gutted. Tried to report this in the morning as we left, however, again, no staff around, just a chef who took the key from me. I was going to send a formal email/letter, but from the look of these reviews…. No one gets a reply or...
Read moreThis is a bit of a mixed review to write as the new owners have only just taken over (6 weeks ago) and are in the process of improving the property. Our room was very nice, had been recently redecorated and the bathroom was also new and very clean (although the extractor fan was not working and there was no window) The downside of the property is the main road location. It was warm when we stayed, so we needed the window open, but due to all the traffic noise it was difficult to relax in the room or sleep because of this. Perhaps a fan in the room would have been beneficial or in the future air con so that the road noise is not an issue. As a fellow business owner I appreciate how hard it is to get a business on track and particularly such a large venue, but I do think that uniforms for the staff would not go amiss (so you know they work there and are not guests) and perhaps some colourful hanging baskets outside to make it look inviting, it looks closed!. Our room was not serviced whilst we stayed and perhaps the staff not walking around in PJs in the morning could be looked into. When we actually went to leave and deposit our key at 10.30, there was no one to be found. The venue is only a 1 mile walk or drive from Windermere, so is in a great location and I just think if the small things can be addressed initially it would make all the difference. There is a lovely outdoor area but it desperately needs weeding and there is litter everywhere. I fully appreciate it is being upgraded but I it is very evident from our stay that things, from a guest point of view, are not there yet. The girls working (when we could find them) were...
