Style of the room was minimalist with a neutral palate. The bed was large and the pillows were soft. There was a walk in shower. |There the positives end. The room was freezing. On arrival we were shown to our room where we found the windows wide open. The staff member explained previous occupants had left the heating on and the room had become unbearably hot. This proved to be so far away from our experience that it was unbelievable. Once left alone we shut the windows and turned the heating up. No result. We got into bed fully clothed to warm up and reported all this to the person working the bar when we went down for dinner. She agreed to sort it out but blamed other occupants for turning the heating up too high which resulted in the thermostat in the hallway prioritising the hall before the rooms. We again asked her to sort it out which she assured us she would. |We went for our evening meal which was yet another let down. My meal was acceptable but my husband’s Thai green curry was inedible. Chicken in the curry was an extra which incurred an additional charge. The chicken had been previously cooked an and then I can only presume, microwaved. It was hard and cardboard-like. Inedible. We didn’t risk a dessert. |We returned to our room to find it still freezing. My husband attempted to go to the bar and ask for someone to but the door from the hallway to the bar had been locked. Only exit was the emergency fire escape. |We gave up and went to bed in our clothes. The duvet would have been adequate if there had been heating but certainly not without it. The shower cubicle proved to be dirty evidenced by the brown staining in the corner where the shower unit was installed. It all needed a good scrub.|Breakfast next morning was verging on comedic. We were presented with a fully comprehensive menu detailing everything you would expect. We ordered tea then asked for fruit juice. We ordered the full English. Our server assumed that was it. We then had to ask for cereal and were offered three options. She came back to tell us only Special K was available. We both ordered that although that was not one of the three original options. |To be fair, the cooked breakfast was hot and tasty but our order for toast and marmalade resulted in fried bread and marmalade. Not an acceptable combination. We left it.|We used the excellent previous reviews when selecting this hotel to begin our holiday in the Lake District and Yorkshire dales. I cannot understand why our experience was so diverse from others.|We will not be returning, wish we had selected this hotel and would not recommend this to anyone for...

Read moreWe were lured here by the reviews which I’m afraid have proved to be a travesty of the reality!||Arriving here on a Sunday afternoon as a stopover on our way up north, I can honestly conclude that this was the worst overnight experience in my 72 years. The bar was extremely rowdy and it remained so for the whole of our stay. ||On being shown to our room, we were told that it was being “aired” following the previous occupants. As a consequence of this it was very cold. In fact, a great deal was made about the likely chilliness of the rooms, both by the member of staff and in the Visitors’ Guide which states “If you are feeling a little chilly, please speak to a team member and we can boost your heating”. Despite asking for the heating to be boosted on at least three occasions, it never happened. There was absolutely no heating and with the weather being unseasonably cold we were left permanently chilled and had to sleep fully clothed!||The Tavern at Hale promotes itself as being a “Contemporary Gastro pub”. This has to be a joke! We booked in for the evening meal. The menu was restricted and the bar severely depleted, apparently because they didn’t have the full range available when the place wasn’t fully booked! The Thai Green Curry (with optional chicken) was disgusting, the lump of chicken being overcooked, dry and impossible to cut with the available cutlery. ||In the morning the Full English breakfast as advertised on the menu was supposed to consist of a choice of juices, cereals and toast. Regrettably, however, until we specifically asked for these they were not offered by the server. Having established our right to receive what we were actually paying for, we did eventually receive an acceptable juice, cereal and cooked breakfast. We were incredulous, however, after requesting toast and marmalade, when a plate of FRIED BREAD and marmalade turned up!!!||WE COULDN’T GET OUT OF THERE...
