A couple of take aways from our journey yesterday. Menu was outdated. We wanted a glass of cider that was on the drinks menu, just to be told that they didn’t have it as they had changed suppliers. This left a lot to be desired, as not many drinks were left to choose from. The fish and chips were fine, but it tasted very weird. The fish tasted frozen, or rather, not fresh. It had a strange plasticky taste as though it had been stored in Tupperware. The sweet potato fries were undercooked and not crisp, the same for the home chips. Generally left a lot to be desired. Garlic bread was £4 for 2 pieces, which were hard and chewy. We had no choice but to eat our food as there was no table service. We watched staff throughout the restaurant ask other tables (literally next to us!) how their food was and if they needed any more drinks, but never came to speak to us. I had finished my first drink and needed another, but was never asked. The off taste of the food could not be addressed as nobody came to ask. Plates were collected from us after our meal, and we were not asked how the food was. We were just given the dessert board, which was a massive chalk board on the table. It was very unappealing, and didn’t make sense. Just print it!! We had to wait for staff to come and explain the dessert menu as it just said “vanilla ice cream” for 3.90, but not how many scoops etc. Staff didn’t know if the pudding had dates in it, and told me I couldn’t mix ice creams, which I was told upon paying, was possible, so I ended up getting an order I didn’t want out of misinformation. We were pestered by flies the entire time. My glass had the paint chipping off of it, which got stuck to my hands. Not very sanitary. We waited 10 minutes for someone to come collect our empty glasses, which were only actually taken once we’d left the table to pay. We were asked by management (I think) if our food was okay, admittedly we didn’t say anything as we were just generally unhappy and had already decided we wouldn’t return. This was about an hour into our visit. We decided instead to mention it upon paying. We bought a cocktail deal, 2 for £14, but checking the receipt now, we were charged full price for both (£7.95). Upon complaining about these things, the lady at the bar was very understanding and very sympathetic. This was refreshing and made us a little happier, but we still wouldn’t return. She took off the cost of the drinks for us (a pint of Guinness, cider, and a coke), which of course was a very nice gesture of good will. We both appreciated that massively.
Overall, the experience was disappointing. We were overcharged (which is balanced out by the removal of the drinks at the end), the food was mediocre at best, the service was God awful, and the flies and chipping paint on glasses just really made for a cheap, unappealing experience. I wouldn’t recommend, I’ll probably go to a Greene King...
Read moreI have dined here on a number of occasions over the years with work, friends and with family, but after today's experience, we will not be returning. And would discourage others from dining here too.
We were sat next to two large reserved tables, they arrived shortly after us. It was a party of 16+ children. They were a very large group who were shouting over eachother, to the point we couldn't hold a conversation due to the level of noise. We requested to move on three different occasions, after we finished our food as fast as possible, I said I would like to order deserts but not sat here, two different members of staff said they'd sort it. After 25 minutes a quite rude man came over to the table and said there was no more tables. I said we would be leaving then. We hadn't finished our drinks, ate our food as quickly as possible just so we could leave because of how loud the other tables were. We weren't the only people unhappy and none of the staff had even politely asked them to keep the noise down. They were walking around, playing games with kids, yelling at eachother and going in and out of the back door next to us, which we had been tokd we could not to use.
I said I wouldn't be happy paying the full price as the experience was dreadful (ironically he asked me to repeat on multiple occassions because he couldn't hear me over the noise) he proceeded to tell me that it was busy and they had kids and it was a bank holiday, no budging on table, price or even talking to the other party. The other side of the pub was like a different place. The people sat next to us were very loud and inconsiderate of other people also eating out, treating it as their own private function room. He began to argue with me, no apologies, no compromise, he then called me "love" three times, being very patronising, standing over me, I said not to call me love, he replied "who are you talking to", whilst gritting his teeth, to which I replied "obviously you" he then told us all to leave the premises and walked away. So we left and definitely will not be returning or recommending. I think this guy is working in the wrong business with this sort of attitude and behaviour. Actually quite worrying.
Food itself was ok, beef was tough...
Read moreI had been invited to celebrate the 90th birthday of a lovely lady for whom my late Mother had been a bridesmaid in the 1950's
This wonderful Inn establishment at Running Waters managed to cater for a party of about 16 people ( 4 of whom were young children ). This entourage , as I described it , represented the Patterson family from Sherburn down to parts of North Yorkshire.
We all chose our meals in advance and there must have been at least six different Sunday lunch options to chose from. The staff were essentially young people in their 20"s. Their efficiency , kindness and patience with such a large family group was warming to witness.
One of the proprietors took a Patterson team.photograph in the car park afterwards before we all went our separate ways ( nice touch)
I'm sure the owners would like to increase the size of their existing car parking facility however as it was barely adequate to cope with the influx of customers that know about this Inn's fine reputation.
Suffice to say , I was a latecomer for an unofficial 1 pm start to this lunch but as early as 1.20pm on this Sunday afternoon , all regulation spaces were taken and furthermore , I had to leave my car teetering precariously on the final section of driveway approach to this place. Not ideal by any means and I did note that there had been a potential customer looking for another space following my car and he ended up driving off to be fed elsewhere.
This observation does not in any way detract from this having been a hugely successful and entertaining Sunday lunch out.
