EDIT - thanks for the response, I let Nathan know my roast was only okay and he wandered off without probing more. Furthermore he did not ask how the dessert was, nor offer any coffees to have with the dessert. I provided feedback to the bar staff prior to paying but the issues were fundamental to any dining experience so there was no point in discussing further.
I appreciate your gen-z comment as I’m actually a millennial so my skin routine must be doing me some favours.
Instead of using combative language and pointing your finger at those who have had a poor experience, I’d strongly recommend looking inwards. It may help with mitigating against potential poor reviews like this in the future. Attempting to ridicule me has just ended up in embarrassment for yourself. —————————
Where to start…. we read The Tollemache Arms had won awards so went here for a last minute Sunday roast with my wife. There was no seating in the restaurant but they have a really nice heated barn where people can sit. The only issue is that the barn has a concrete floor with no rugs or carpet so whilst there’s some heating from the ceiling your feet get freezing throughout the meal.
I’d really recommend that the staff try sitting for a meal in the barn to see what it’s like for their customers.
We both had a roast dinner and unfortunately it seems the chef has a strong aversion to seasoning and flavour. Everything tasted like it had something missing and therefore lacked any real taste.
The roasts was lukewarm, not hot, which compounded the poor experience. It reminded me of a Toby’s carvery but an expensive version. The meat tasted like it had been sitting out for a long time.
The desserts were different, almost, I had a basque cheesecake which was delicious however my wife had a treacle tart with tepid custard which ruined the dessert for her.
The location and surroundings are very nice and I can imagine hosting a party in the summer to be great. Unfortunately because of our experience today we’ll definitely not be returning and will share our review with our...
Read moreNuts put on deserts without anything being said on menu. Be careful anyone with tree nut allergies!!!!
Over all food is good here the starters and mains are quite tasty and nice chips the chicken burger i had had grissle and brown bits of chicken and a whole load of skin unusual for a place to not use pure white chicken breast fillet so had to not eat a quarter of it as not ediible!!! and on a busy night food was brought out quite quick. However what let it down and was quite a shock was the Raspberry Sorbet has almond nuts all in it and no mention of this on the menu. I personally do not like sliced almonds and would never have ordered it if i knew but i know someone who has an allergy to these and if they had been with me tonight without there glasses on would have ate this and no doubt been very ill and can be fatal for some.
Our waitress was nice polite but did not know much about the food (she might have been new) it was supposed to come with like a caramel biscuit and others but no sign of that. I did say to her on the menu the Raspberry desert does not mention almond nuts she said oh yes they would never serve them without telling people well not true because it is not written on menu i double checked when i left. This can be serious for some they need to change this on the menu or get rid of that dessert it was ok and refreshing but i doubt anyone would miss it if it was taken off surprised it was more expensive than the other deserts.
I would have given the food mostly 4 stars because over all we liked it but because of the nut situation could not. I am only really posting this just so others can be careful and not order that particular desert.
Just seen other reviews elsewhere about giving people nuts and not putting it on the menu and waitress being told about nut allergy ahead of ordering with someone with a nut allergy seems they have not learned until they kill someone then they will be in big trouble like some other recent cases reported...
Read moreWhat a Gem of a place! Went here after a days work when my colleague booked in at a local hotel and we wanted somewhere close to there that served food so we could eat together before I drove up to my next job. Looked on Google Maps and this place was really close, so called to see if they had a table available and a decent sized car park as we both drive large vans. Thankfully they did and we have since discovered that we were lucky as its often booked solid so Thankful for that. On arrival, it is easy to find, the car park large and well organised, staff were efficient and friendly and then we were sat at our table ready to view the menu. The place itself is a really old country pub with low beams and tons of character, whist being clean and well set out. The menu had a good range of dishes and there were several that appealed to me and the same for my colleague. I chose the burger with some onion rings on the side, my colleague chose the salmon. The menu prices were not cheap, speaking as a northerner, we don't like expensive, unless it is good value for money. Both dishes were served fairly quickly and were absolutely delicious! The food was well presented, delivered with a smile, perfectly cooked, full of flavour and therefore, in my humble opinion, good value for money! Without doubt I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good home cooked food at a realistic cost for such great quality. Well done and thank you to all the staff who clearly accommodated us at short notice with friendly professionalism. Hope we get to be working around there...
