We were staying for several days at a house right next door to the Westbury Inn, and so a/some visit(s) seemed like the thing to do! Unfortunately for us, the pub was closed for a day or two when we arrived. We made up for lost time by popping in several times during our stay, twice for dinner and a couple of other times just for simple quaffing. So, what's the pub like? We were blessed to show up one evening and find it closed. That's the blessing? No. Just as we arrived, the owner (Andy) also showed up and let us in. Personal service! A great conversation with the owner followed over the following hour or so, where he told us everything we wanted to know about his background (he's a trained chef); the pub (it's independent); available parking spaces (he told us - cryptically - that the village roads have no double yellow lines painted anywhere). He was very passionate about his food, and we are very happy to report that we benefitted from excellent grub.
The first time we had dinner there, we didn't make a reservation. In retrospect a reservation was advisable, but a table for a party who hadn't yet appeared suddenly became available to us. Score! I chose the grilled whole sole (delicious!) that evening.
The other time was ate there, I chose the stilton and nut wellington. That was pretty remarkable - really flavorful. The crust (the pastry?) was solid, and I have no idea how the chef managed to pull this off. Can I have the recipe pretty please? It's too far for me to come over regularly and get my fix of this dish (I live 5272 miles away according to Google Maps).
Two thumbs up. Andy, keep up the good work, you and your staff - especially your chef, whose name I...
Read moreRang and asked for a last minute reservation for an evening meal on Friday night. We were told on the call , that is was very busy and that was fine for us. We arrived and the place was buzzing with locals and some people that were obviously staying near by, the outside beer garden to the front was packed, live music as well. Lovely array of fine beers, local ciders and lagers to choose from. There was a fantastic choice on the menu and a well stocked special boards. My daughter order the homemade house pie, with home cooked chips and wow, she said it was one of the best she had had, I went for the Hunters chicken, again with the home cooked chips and it was fantastic. My husband is always a sucker for any fish special and in this case, again he wasn't disappointed, fresh Mackerel. The presentation and portion size was spot on. This is all home cooked food, plenty of it, served on pipping hot plates, well worth the wait. The bar staff were all very welcoming and like I have said they were extremely busy, which is great to see for this good old village pub again. If you can't find room in the front beer garden, there is plenty of room out on the back...
Read moreThe pub looks lovely from the outside but the unfortunately we had a bad experience that was dealt with very poorly.
As entered the restaurant area my 84 year Nan tripped on the step and had a bad fall. There were no signs to warn of the step and the white line drawn on the step, presumably to help warn of the step, had worn to the point where it was no longer visible.
With the help of a friendly local, we immediately sat my Nan down and asked for a brandy. When this eventually arrived we asked for the bill as my Nan was shaken up and wanted to get home. Whilst the waitress apologised, it was clear the owner / manager was aware of what happened but not once did they come over and apologise, ask if my Nan was alright or offer a first aid kit for her bleeding hand or an ice pack, even though the restaurant and pub was empty. On top of this we were expected to pay for the drink.
It was an unfortunate situation, but the staff lacked professionalism and courtesy. I’d advise they place signs to warn customers of the step to avoid this happening again.
Limited menu. Wouldn’t return...
