The White Horse is a fantastic, traditional English village pub. They have an amazing selection of ever-changing beers drawn from the cask, as well as more bottles and cans than you could shake a stick at! Staff are exceptionally friendly, and are willing to offer recommendations even though they can't offer tasters as the beer is in such limited amounts. The food menu is much more limited than the beer one, but is still good. The ploughmans lunch is great with thick sliced fresh bread, a choice of cheeses and pickles. The fish and chips was lovely as well (although it would have been nice to have some peas, mushy or otherwise, or other veg with it), and the lamb kebabs delicious as well. Desserts sounded lovely, and the strawberry and gooseberry sponge with custard was fantastic! Good, traditional British dessert! The interior is very traditional - wooden beams, white walls, lots of tankards and jugs hanging from the beams. Whether you're a tourist, or just like good food and beer, the White Horse is worth the journey...
Read moreLovely country pub with gorgeous flowers in the gardens and in the front of the pub. Its Dog friendly, great value for money with a fabulous range of beers for those who drink beer like my partner. Really enjoyable and pleasant atmosphere.
However, we ordered a salad each for lunch which took forever (at least 40 minutes) to arrive, which is why I haven't awarded 5 stars. This section is not well organised and should be simple and quick to serve as all the ingredients are already cut and available.
The grumpy lady in the salad section was not only slow, but appeared to be counting the number of lettuce leaves to be put on each plate. Perhaps prearranged salads on plates might speed up this process. She seemed to be opening and shutting sliding glass panels continuously whilst counting out each of the various salad items to add to each plate. Very disjointed and inefficient process and in dire need of an overhaul. I would hate to order food here when the place is busy...
Read moreI've enjoyed more pints here over the years than I can count, and never the same line up twice. When time travel is finally perfected, I will be travelling to The White Horse circa June 1996, September 1999, August 2004, and December 2009. Those are marked in my journal as sublime experiences with cask ales the likes of which I've never found again.
It is truly a bittersweet feeling to drink here, because the joy of discovering a new pint that ticks all the boxes is matched by the sadness that by the next week, it will be gone forever.
The lovely back garden in summer, surrounded by birdsong, is matched by the cozy hearth in winter, with the dark beamed room filled with conversation between old friends and neighbours.
One of my top ten places in...
