Sunday Roast at The White Horse: Expectations vs. Reality We visited The White Horse with high expectations after reading several positive reviews, and other family members having a wonderful midweek evening meal. Unfortunately, our experience was somewhat inconsistent, although there were certainly moments of enjoyment. The meal started with a slight mix-up in our drink orders, understandable as the staff seemed to be in training and normally not even note worthy. The highlight was undoubtedly the dessert, which was delicious and a high point of the dining experience. The staff were also quite friendly, which added a nice touch to the atmosphere. However, the main course didn’t fully meet our expectations. I admit unlike some people we have a love of gravy….. and our request for extra gravy was initially met with two small servings, maybe enough to enjoy a shot of gravy but not for the plate, and some what watery in comparison to the gravy served with the platers. Part of the beef, was requested well-done, it was tough and chewy. Additionally, the lack of child-sized dessert options seemed like a missed opportunity to accommodate families and potentially increase revenue. Considering the price, I felt the overall value didn’t quite match the quality and quantity of food provided, particularly the vegetable selection. While I’m not eager to return immediately, I wouldn’t be opposed to another visit if it were suggested. I hope The White Horse can address these inconsistencies, as there’s potential for a more fulfilling dining experience that aligns with the positive reviews already received.

A very welcoming return visit, to a really good gastro pub. The food is outstanding, the lovage veloute with smoked eel probably the best soup ever tasted, as smooth and rich as could be created. Chicken with a Middle Eastern stuffing and hispi cabbage perfect. The burger as always rich with the flavours of the grill, the triple cooked chips crispy as can be outside soft and smooth inside. The whole finished with a lemon posset topped with granola and strawberries. The menu changes frequently, so what we enjoyed may not be on for your visit, but whatever is will be wonderful. As much as can be sourced locally. What's not to like. Booking is essential and a visit not to be missed. All the right precautions are in place.

Came in on a Wednesday for a bite to eat. Friendly staff: I spoke to a very pleasant woman who I think was the owner. Just had a light bite, fish butty and chips. That description does it no justice though, it was so much more than that. Home baked brioche bun made all the difference, and beautiful chips that were more like roast potatoes! Proper Chunky and I think double or triple cooked. So tasty! Beautiful decor, very traditional and keeping with the building. Worth a visit for sure. As a pub manager myself, I know what to look for and this really ticked all the boxes. I will return again soon. Last note: Well kept beer. Fussy ale drinker here and could not fault it at all.

One of the best restaurants near us. The greeting is always consistent with a large smile and a warm welcome. A relaxing environment is produced for all customers whether eating alone or in a group. No piped music just a background hum of people talking, engaging with one another.

I may be biased by the food. I come mainly to enjoy the soft Scotch egg. This time my wife and I shared the chacuterie. The meats were salami, chorizo and jamon all tasty melt in the mouth. My wife had the chicken while I elected the Scotch egg with new potatoes for a main. The chicken was moist and flavoursome. Scotch egg on a bed of mash and a covering of chutney. All delicious.

We accompanied the meal with a syrah, grenache, and merlot red.

Not regular sweeties but we went for the creme brulee and an apple and rhubarb crumble with a scoop of vanilla.

A bonus was that the servers are willing to engage authentically in conversation if desired.

Do try this local gem. You will not be disappointed if you enjoy treating yourself now and again. We will definitely be back most likely with friends next time to share...

Booked a table for 25th Sept which was last night of our holiday in the area and whilst waiting for our food, the "locals" were allowed to walk through dining area without masks on yet visitors were told they had to wear them upon entry! That was the first negative. The food was overpriced for the size of portions. Our meal came with triple cooked chips which unfortunately were very overcooked, greasy and we both had 5-6 chips each! My husband then ordered the cheese board which was £7 and consisted of 2 types of cheese, 4 very very small crackers and 5 grapes! We rejected it and said we weren't paying for it. I ordered the apple crumble which barely covered the bottom of the dish and had literally no apples in it, just puree. For £6.95 I would have expected some apple pieces at least. Finally there was no atmosphere in there nor background music. Would...
