I was having a search around the area for somewhere to have an evening meal while we were away. The White Horse was listed as being in walking distance of our accommodation which is perfect when you're staying away from home and both fancy a drink in the evening with your meal. With myself having to be gluten free and dairy free, when I saw the menu, I was absolutely astounded! Everything was marked up with its allergens and where accommodations can be made for people's dietary requirements. We made a booking via email and turned up earlier than planned on the evening. We enjoyed a refreshing drink in the outside area taking in the last of the evening warmth and went back inside at our booked time. We had a beautiful table for 2 beside a window seat which was lovely. I think it was the owner I ordered with at the bar who was lovely and chatty. When the food came, oh my days! I was in heaven. It was beautifully presented, and tasted as good as it looked. I've never had gluten free batter so light and crispy on the king prawns. The main course was homemade chicken schnitzel (gluten free) with a garlic oil (marg not butter!) And rosemary potatoes. The side salad/coleslaw was a very tasty side indeed. Overall I couldn't recommend this pub highly enough to anyone - but especially if you have specific dietary requirements, you'll be very well looked after and eating out will be a pleasure not a chore!

What a great pub experience (we visited in Nov. 2023). This was the 2nd time visiting and eating at this pub. It is perfectly located for climbing Blencathra otherwise it can be considered a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, it is certainly worth a trip to as the food is gorgeous (being vegan, I'm referring to the vegan options here, but everyone looked very happy with their meals) and ales really good and change over time. The staff are super friendly, polite & very efficient. We were in a camper van for the weekend and wanted to hike Blencathra for sunrise, so the pub was ideally placed for this. And, brilliantly, if you eat & drink in the pub, you can use their car park to overnight for free. I would suggest booking a table in advance as it gets very busy; our table was next to a real fire, which was great with minus temperatures outside. The pub is very dog friendly, so feel free to take your 4 legged friends in the pub. The pub also offers accommodation (called the bunkhouse), which appears to get booked up, so again book in advance. Overall, with excellent food, friendly staff, a really lovely atmosphere and good beer, we had a brilliant experience here and would highly recommend it. It also makes a great place to head for if you are after a Sunday roast as this is offered every Sunday.

Off food not taken seriously when mentioned. Waited for my roast dinner as they forgot to cook my vegetables so my friend had eaten by the time it arrived. Tbf they were apologetic and made me a new one.. Then when I finally tucked into my meal the nuts in the nut roast were completely rancid and spoiled. If you know anything about food you know this taste immediately. So I had to leave the nut roast and eat around as it was uneditable. I politely and discreetly informed the owners at the end so they could rectify it with me by offering me a refund or just so they could sort it out for their other customers. They didn’t really seem to care I couldn’t eat my meal. They admitted they’ve never eaten the nut roast ever .. so why would you serve something you haven’t tried yourself? They also said they buy it in, almost passing the blame. But at the end of the day your serving food that could be dangerous and could make someone sick and still didn’t offer me any compensation or real apology. Very disappointing. The owner even made some joke about it being a nut roast so why would he try it. Just not taking what I was saying seriously at all. I am talking about food that shouldn’t be served. I urged them to try it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I never leave reviews but this really was out of order.

Well where do we start. On arrival we were totally ignored by the bartender until he finished talking to his friend, once he decided to book us in he took our money and went back to talking to his friend. So we were just stood there not knowing where our room was. Anyway we finally got to our room which was very small for three bunk beds, if you were just wanting it as an over night stop it wouldnt be so bad. The bathroom looked like it was never cleaned, the kitchen the same along with the communal area. I know its cheap accommodation but a couple of pictures or some books and a good clean wouldn't go a miss. I've slept in cleaner caves! When we went down to the pub for new years eve we were told we should've pre-booked if we wanted to eat, nowhere on the site said we had to do this or the bartender when we arrived. So we had to purch four young children on a tiny table so they could eat some tea. My wife is allergic to gluten and dairy products and when she asked if there was an allergy option the bartender just laughed in her face and walked off 🤬. So our evening meal was a bowl of chips. The evening just got worse our friends and all our children just got bored and ended up going to bed, so never saw the new year come in. This is the best bit and probably the most dangerous, the pub decided to set off some fireworks at midnight. Nothing wrong with that except when you let the bloody things off right next to two massive tanks of Propane gas!! 🌋🔥 The STUPID half whits could have...

We arrived for a booking we’d made earlier that day & were seated by the bar. After checking the menu we ordered fairly quickly but we immediately felt an unpleasant vibe from the waiter with the Scottish accent & dreadlocks. It was as though he didn’t want us or anyone in fact there, the most unwelcoming man that you could possibly place as your front of house. We ordered and my six year old niece proceeded to open her colouring book and colour whilst waiting for the food to arrive. The same man came over swiftly and told us they didn’t allow colouring in the pub in case it marked the table and told us to put it away… what the heck? Very, very strange. This made my niece cry unnecessarily. The food arrived and it was average, we had roast beef and there were two small pieces of beef that was a third fat. The meal was swimming in gravy and the Yorkshire pudding was like eating a pork scratching, hard as anything and pretty tasteless overall. The other waiters were also very off hand with not just us but anyone who tried to get a table or order a drink at the bar, and not one cracked a smile the whole time we were there. All in all it was supposed to be a pleasant sunday evening meal to round off our time in the lakes for a birthday weekend and we unfortunately couldn’t have chosen a more gloomy venue. I could elaborate more on the evening but I’ve had enough typing a review for this place and it’s miserable staff. Lighten up folks it may...
