Called in here on the way back to the South West from the Lake District. Had called a few pubs close to the M6 asking if they allowed dogs and many didn't. The lovely lady at the White Lion said they did allow dogs and although they don't normally reserve tables said she'd keep one back for the 4 of us as 2 dogs.
25 minutes later we arrived at the picturesque very old pub (15th century?). It's not large and there's lots of nooks and crannys but it was warm and welcoming with real fires burning.
Not a massive menu (which we took as a good sign) and everything was very reasonable priced. Four of us ate with a couple of drinks apiece and 2 coffees and bill came to about £42 - a bargain!!
Hubby said his steak and ale pie was the best ever esp the gravy. Father in law enjoyed his hot pot, Mother in law had the biggest ploughmans I've ever seen with fantastic thick cut home cooked ham which she pronounced delicious. I had a warm beef and onion baguette served with lovely homemade chips and to my suprise it was covered in gravy. Think it's quite a northern thing to have gravy on sandwiches but wow it was wonderful and the beef melted in my mouth. There's no chef or pretentious cooking here - just great value, lovely quality, brilliantly cooked homemade food. It appears they only do food at lunchtimes though.
Pub was obviously the heart of the village - lots of locals popping in on a Saturday lunchtime and everyone very friendly, There was a footpath close by for us to walk the dogs before getting back in the car for the journey home. Would definitely use as a stop off point close the the M6 (junction 16) again. Shame it's not closer - it's just how...
Read morePaid a visit recently to watch a singer advertised Not having been for years I was surprised what a transition from the place it used to be years ago. I went with my wife and daughter and I was shocked we got there early 7pm and ordered a drink sat down and every table had empty glasses on it and the tables were so dirty they were sticky the tables rickety not old charm rickerty just broken legs etc floor was filthy thank goodness no food was served there .things got worse as night went on the singer started about 8.15pm and a small area was crammed with a queue at the bar. And the obviously local clientele were drunk rude swearing looking for trouble rude to women that had visited who were fans of the singer a small group of of young men (whom I had observed are well known to the licensee) just ran riot trying to show off and be rude surrounding my daughter at one stage forcing themselves next to her I had to step in and several people were offended by this and left and stood outside to watch the artist through the windows it was getting out of hand a real shame to what used to be the place to be seen at years ago not at all welcoming it seems unless licensee gets rid of the unfriendly intoxicated territorial locals from the pub it doesn’t feel safe to go...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic pub. A hidden jewel right by the M6. I was staying in the Services Travelodge nearby, and in a search for decent food, I found this pub!
They weren't serving food that night, but promised me a hearty Steak and Ale pie for my second night if I came back.
And despite not actively serving food when I returned, they delivered what can only be described as the best Steak and Ale pie I've ever tasted.
Now THAT is customer service!
I may never be in this part of the country again, but the fact that they went over and above for a visitor that they remembered was in search of a good meal, shows the commitment they must have for their own community!
Thank you guys! If I'm ever in this part of the country again, I will certainly make a special...
