I came here with a group of 10+ people for a three course meal on a Saturday 13 January 2018 for an 8pm sit down. There was not a set menu so we ordered our food on the A Le Carte menu. We ordered our meal in advance of the day and would be paying for the meal on the day.
I really liked the look of the pub. It looked quite cosy and warm to be in. We were seated upstairs for our meal. The stairs were quite steep so this may not be good for someone with issues walking.
The only negative I found with upstairs was that we were rather cramped.
The waiting staff looked very presentable and most were very friendly.
For a starter I ordered the deep fried brie wedges (£5.95) which came with cranberry and apple salsa. To me, it was cooked perfectly. The outside was crispy and when cut, the cheese oozed out. My only complaint is that there wasn't more of it! These were served quite quickly to us sitting down.
I must admit that I was extremely disappointed with the service, presentation and quality of my sirloin steak. I ordered the sirloin steak with chunky fries, peas, creamy white wine, mushroom and Dijon mustard sauce with a side of onion rings. Firstly, my meal was not delivered at the same time as the rest of my group. I received my onion rings but had not received my steak. I worked in the food industry so I understand the stress that waiting staff can bear so I usually allow time before bothering them. After around 10 minutes and not receiving my meal, one of my party asked the waiting staff where my steak was. A waitress came over and said that they thought everyone had received their meals. No apology, just said that my steak would be out as soon as possible. This to me was a complete fob off. I received my onion rings but not received my steak? Surely, they must have known my complete order because otherwise, I would not have received onion rings. I am an understanding person but to not even receive an apology I thought was rude.
When eventually I received my steak (which I ordered rare) I was given a slab of meat on a plate on its own. Nothing else (the chips were in a separate pot). At £20.95 I was expecting more than that. The presentation of the steak, for me, was appalling and no effort or thought had been made to give me what I had ordered. It seemed like it was a “get it out as quickly as possible job”. As well, the steak was definitely medium rather than rare.
The waitress we had had an attitude on her. I understand that we don’t always want to be at work but even when you are not in the mood, you still should be professional. She made me feel extremely uncomfortable to even talk to her so I didn’t want to complain in case I had my head bitten off. When she gave me my steak I said thank you and she just walked off and didn’t say another word to me.
I enjoyed the onion rings and I ate those before my steak came. I didn’t enjoy the chips. They were thick cut and to me, inside was slightly raw.
Overall, I was extremely disappointed with the service, presentation and overall standard of my main meal. I had been looking forward to this meal all day and hadn’t eaten because I knew I should have been having a three course meal.
Our dessert came out within 5 minutes of me finishing my main (everyone else had already finished theirs). I ordered the crème brulee which was lovely.
As I said before, the bar staff downstairs were lovely and very quick and giving me my drinks. They were polite and friendly to talk to.
Overall, I did leave disappointed. I didn’t appreciate the way the waitress spoke to us and the meal was not up to standard.
*I'd like to point out that I tried to call the Whitmore Arms the next day but received no response, as well, I posted a review on Trip Advisor soon after and received no response. Like I said, the reason why I didn't complain there and then is because the waitress was so rude to me I was afraid I would get my head bitten off... Before blaming your customers, maybe look at your...
Read moreHaving just returned from Afternoon Tea I feel compelled to write a review about our experience. Our table was ready and we were served promptly taking the option of Prosecco as this was a Christmas treat from my friend. However this is as good as it gets! The very dainty finger sandwiches were filled with very thick chunky beef slices and ham. My friends beef sandwich was inedible and the white bread used for the ham was soggy and flat. We spoke to the waitress and she came over and took the sandwiches away and returned after about ten minutes with a fresh platter. This time there was a choice of four, ham, cheese, chicken and prawn. Although this was a slight improvement, the white bread used was the same and still soggy and compressed. The cakes were very disappointing, a selection of very small, bite sized cakes which were clearly only recently defrosted. The three tier cake stand was topped with three small scones, just one each. The three pots of Rodda’s cream and jam were perhaps the one highlight of this pathetic excuse for an afternoon tea. Sadly most of the cream was wasted as the scones were so small! Now we come to paying the bill. When we had spoken to the waitress initially, she had said £5 would be deducted for the sandwiches which we thought was £5 off each meal. However when the bill arrived only £5 from the total bill had been deducted. We questioned this with the waitress but were told that the lady who made the tea had gone and she was unable to contact her. We then spoke to another member of staff who was very polite and apologetic, but said that unfortunately the owner was not willing to do anything more. So we had no option but to pay up, £29 each minus £5 divided by 3, and left feeling ever so slightly mugged! Needless to say, we will not be returning and hope that others, having read this revue, will perhaps think twice...
Read moreMe, my partner and my mother in law we went today for Sunday Easter lunch, all I can say the food was great and our table server was great too and at the end we tip our waitress, but I need to point it out something while we were there…we were seated by the door entrance next to the bar and there was a lady with blonde hair and glasses working behind the bar as soon we seated my boyfriend moved my chair to seat me down and he does that all the time to me which is nice having a boyfriend like that anyway this lady said to him in front of us “can I just say it that was really cute” on that I didn’t take particular attention, and than she started to stare at him all the time like a girl that has a heavy crush on somebody, and she was keep checking on him, honestly It wasn’t comfortable for him but also wasn’t comfortable for me, bless him at some point he was staring his plate because he didn’t wanted to disrespected me, all I can say is you can tell everything about her as a person that was really disrespectful and also I didn’t find this professional at all, and we left in a rush because of that lady I was so close to say something because that was really upsetting me and ruined our Easter Lunch. Unbelievable never expected something like this at...
