Edit (original review at bottom) :
Due to the owner replying I though I would add another comment. The owner has replied thinking we were another group of people who were in at the same time and were possibly being awkward, that was another group of people. We were the group completely unrelated to them sat in the corner, the ones who had a pot of tea with one PG tips bag in which almost poured clear even after waiting 5 minutes (didn't want to be too negative so missed out that bit in the original review). Yes, the meal as a whole was substandard, but as I said there were some parts better than others. Also publically calling me/us.....head (never heard that one before) because we have left a bad review is not very nice at all, maybe take the honest review and try to improve. The fact that you've now found out you had two unhappy groups at the same time may mean something.
Original review:
Food was very substandard. The main parts of the meals were OK to good, but the veg, drinks, service etc was very poor. The slightly older woman working the bar had almost no idea how to work the till and was asking customers what they had had to eat and became completely confused with every paying customer. The interior decor of the bar looks like it has been renovated by a blind chimp with its arms tied...

A great example of a village pub that is also welcoming to non-locals. A brilliant selection of beers (including real ale), cider and wines.
Food was very good, and best pub Fish and Chips I've had... For those staying overnight there is also a great selection of breakfast options, with the full English again being exceptional.
Accommodation:
We spent 4 nights at the Witching Post Inn, on arrival landlord (Pete) we very welcoming, and our room was clean, large and comfortable. It's an old building, and an active pub so bear in mind if you are a light sleeper that wants to get sleep before closing time. This wasn't an issue for us as the comfort of the bed sent us to sleep swiftly.
Very dog friendly (accommodation, pub and staff), so if you are not keen on dogs bear that in mind also.
Staff:
The staff were brilliant, very friendly, helpful and really couldn't do enough to help us.
The landlord (Pete) went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time, giving us lots of hints and tips on how to make the most of our time there.
The real star was however the Landlady (Nelly, the pub dog) whose bubbly personality made our trip extra special, and she also was great companion for our own dog at play time.
The Witching Post comes highly...

We were passing by (and having been coming to the area a couple of times a year for the last 25 years), noticed the pub had reopened after a few years of being closed.
WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED!!!!
Landlord was really great. Took the time to chat with us. Really nice guy. Spent a lot of time doing the place up.
Egton and Egton Bridge have a nice choice of pubs etc. But The Witching Post Inn fills a gap which was definitely missing...
It's not just a hotel with a bar, or a restaurant with a bar, it's a pub that just so happens to also do good pub food.
Landlord impressed us so much that we actually took the decision to go back that night and try out the menu.
3x homemade beef Madras and a classic burger. All really great.
We left a happy well fed group. Then went back everyday until it was time to leave the area to have a couple of very good pints of theakstons Lightfoot.
All I will say is. In the area, DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THE WITCHING POST INN!!!! Great pub, offering something different to the other local "pubs".
Really looking forward to coming again in...
