As a family, we were staying at the Premier Inn, which is the same building, so a natural choice to eat at the pub located downstairs.
I had the new mixed tandoori grill. It was presented in a manner not befitting consumption. The food was hot, but also very greasy, with the exception of the chicken. The smallest portion of chutney ever witnessed. the meal looked like my child had deeply fried everything, and put it on a plate.
My wife's burger came out, initially with no dressing, and then after a return, so much dressing it swamped the meal. The burger was cold and the bun was stale.
My eldest wanted the extra large fish and chips. We withheld on the peas and tartar sauce. Again, the meal was literally dripping in grease and a size of fish that was smaller than expected. The table next to us had ordered the normal fish, and the portion was the same. Charged extra for no reason!!
My youngest meal, chicken nuggets with chips and beans was the only meal that looked like it should.
On top of this was the constant swarm of wasps. Every window was open due to the heat, and as many wasps that I killed, another 3 would land on your plate.
Breakfast
As we had stayed with the Premier Inn, we paid for breakfast in advance. We came down around 845. breakfast is served from 630. I would hazard a guess that the cooked section had been under the lights since that time, if not before. The food looked like and tasted like plastic. it was dry and difficult to eat. only the covered beans and mushrooms had any moisture left unless you dug deep in the bacon to find a bit swimming in a pool of its own grease. the black pudding and hash browns were not palatable.
The low volume of eaters from either the hotel or normal guests is the reason that the food sat for so long.
We had specifically asked for pancakes for my youngest son as none were out, and after 1/2 hr of waiting, and then trying to find a member of staff, were told they had been put out near the bread. Thanks for letting me know.
All the bread was stale and dry.
The once runny fried eggs could have been used as an offensive throwing weapon.
As with dinner the previous evening, all windows were open for the heat, which allowed a swarm of wasps in. I killed around 15 before I even started eating. we shut windows to stem the flow but the main emergency exit was wide open. the irony was that we were instructed to sit in the warmest section of the restaurant, rather than a cooler lower area.
Overall, it was poor, really...
Read moreWe have visited this Brewers Fayre for walk up all you can eat Breakfast several times. This visit was the Friday before October Half Term and we wanted to get something to eat before we travelled to stay over near Leeds Bradford and fly abroad the following morning. Everything was going as usual until the Cooked Breakfast arrived, before we had even started to eat the prepared to order breakfasts from the kitchen (no buffet this day) we could see what appeared to be a massive patch of mould in the middle of all the hashbrowns served. We called a waitress over and said we thought the hashbrowns were off and had disintergrated as we passed them over. No offer to remake any of breakfasts (2 adults and a child dining) or even an apology at his stage. We continued to eat then we found the bacon to be slimy and not as clear on the pictures slightly green and smelt funny. Other patrons noticed their bacon to be the same and refused to eat it. At this stage I asked for a manager to come over, I got quite robust with him over all this as I found a piece of glass in a takeaway pizza this year which damaged my teeth so I am very extra sensitive to food safety. I asked for a full refund which was given before we left, In the car park I called Food Standards and filed a report. Food Standards only looked into the Hash Brown issue which they agreed with Whitbread (owners of Brewers Fayre) that there was an issue with the supplier and bruising can appear on the potato. A quick search on Google showed that the symptoms we faced was around expired frozen hash browns which start to go like this after spending too long in the Freezer, this is not a heath risk to eat I am told, but amazed that anybody could serve and wave these away from a professional kitchen regardless . We surmise the bacon had gone off in the Freezer and that is a health risk to consumers, I did suffer from sickness and diarrhoea after visiting here which impacted the start of my holiday. Appalled by the service and the response by Food Standards and also Whitbread who dismissed the complaint out of hand. I hope this review and pictures uploaded will guide you to avoid this Brewers Fayre! Based on the sheepish response from staff that morning they had tried to wing service with little or no fresh produce so must have searched the freezer and took a punt. On another note the cooked tomato tasted off as well! I will not dine at a Brewers...
