Best pub and grub for miles
I want to reply to John Healy’s review a few posts down. I was having a lunchtime drink with my partner who had popped out for a vape break with another customer who’d recently suffered a stroke. On returning to the bar this Mr Healy failed to move out the way so the gentleman (who walked with a stick) could take his seat despite being politely asked. I could not believe his attitude towards Sharon the manager and he was downright rude and offensive. She dealt with him professionally then politely asked him to drink up and leave. On his way out he bumped into Sharon’s husband but what he does not say in his review is that he accused Matt of being a racist and even called him a F’ ing C. He makes it sound all one sided but it really wasn’t as he and the group of walkers he refers to had obviously taken their nasty pills that day. In fact the ‘walkers’were proudly saying how they had parked their cars so as to box other cars in, one nearly causing an accident on the busy A4.
DO NOT let Healty’s review influence you as the other reviews are all good! This is a lovely friendly pub with a great atmosphere which serves the most amazing food. The Sunday Carvery is a must and the fact that this pub is nearly always booked out and full is a testimony to it. Booking is essential to avoid disappointment on the day.
This pub’s had mixed reviews in the past but now that Matt and Sharon have recently taken it over, it will improve and can only go from strength to strength. All their team are friendly and welcoming and with the nearby pub now resembling a Weatherspoons this is a beautiful traditional country pub with roaring fires to keep you (and the pooches) warm in the winter. I thoroughly recommend this pub, either for a quick beer or for a meal out.
Sadly there is always the minority who want to spoil it for the majority and who love leaving unnecessary reviews on...

This is a great pub and I am not sure what the previous writer is talking about. It was recommended by the owner of the The Old Forge, a B&B just down the road. As we drove up, the first thing the wife said when we saw it was "this is the perfect English pub" and then again when we went in. I agree wholeheartedly. The Landlord was friendly and courteous, the food good and generous portions.
They server lunch from about noon till 2 PM (1400) and Dinner after 6:30 PM (18:30)
I guess if the other person came after 2 PM she might have been miffed, but the owners have to have some kind of break. This is not New York, or London, this is the English countryside with small hamlets and rolling hills.
We very much recommend the place to all who drive by. The only thing to mention is the owner (a very nice gentleman) is a little standoffish. Not unfriendly or anything, just a close man. We never felt unwelcome, and he imparted some of the history of the place in a most friendly and interesting manor. It seems Dickens stopped here on many an occasion and even did a bit of writing.
It is so nice we are off to the Sunday roast brunch and will stop by again when...
Read moreA lovely old English pub, we chose this location to have a family get together and Sunday carvery roast. We were in a room at the front of the property and the setting and decor was traditional and very clean. The staff were pleasant and helpful but just lacked any genuine warmth, possibly because two of our party of eight had been unable to attend at the last moment and they appeared slightly irritated that we had not let them know in advance. In fact I had tried to contact them before we left home, but as it was two hours earlier they weren’t yet open. The food was plentiful and well cooked. There was a choice of three meats and a nut roast for vegans. In our house we season our food so I found it a bit bland, but if you don’t use salt in your cooking it will be fine. Two of our party chose the nut roast and this was probably the biggest disappointment of the selection, as neither nut roast was eaten, suffering from the same lack of flavour as much of the other food. Would we go back? Probably not, but if you don’t touch salt or herbs, this may be very much to...
