We stayed in April 2025 having booked through booking.com. Bit of a mixed review overall. This pub is no longer to be found on 'booking.com' and their own website does not allow room booking online as yet - all the dates on it currently come up as unavailable so we are not sure how you book now unless it's directly by phone perhaps. It has been under new ownership since Feb 2025. Unlike our previous times here we were disappointed to learn breakfast is no longer included in the price of the room making it a tad more expensive, something which we only found out on arrival. We were offered but declined a continental style breakfast and decided not to ask the price after we realised the price of the sunday roast was on the upper end of the scale. We had originally booked through booking.com and at the time had booked a meal for 7.15 on the first night, a Sunday. On arrival we were told they knew nothing of this and would stop serving food at 6pm. We duly came down in good time and had an expensive sunday roast. The food quality matched the prices however and was delicious, professionally cooked and beautifully presented. There seems to be some sort of communication problem with booking.com/new owners as although our booking was honoured some changes were not communicated to us e.g. no breakfast included and our meal not being actually booked. We have put this down to 'teething problems'. The staff were very all pleasant. Room was smallish but recently decorated. Bed very comfortable but disappointingly our room service was overlooked on one day of our stay. The actual location is in a lovely small quiet village and well situated for...
Read moreWe ate dinner at the Wheatsheaf with 2 other friends - we had been itching to try it out since the new managers had been in situ and the menu had changed.|It was worth the wait...the menu is still relatively small (they have only been there a month!) but it is beautifully formed!|You get bread for the table to share - homemade and absolutely delicious, served with dried onion crumbs. We then shared starters as friends said the portions were generous....unfortunately we chose the same, so I can report the crab cakes were delicious! |For mains, two of us shared the steak and ale pie - (it is made for sharing for 2 people!) At £40 for 2 it is great value, as I only managed a quarter of it, but the menfolk managed to devour any leftovers. The steak was incredibly tasty, and very tender - it is served with red cabbage and chips.|The other 2 mains were the whole plaice on the bone with curry sauce, mussels and shrimps - a difficult dish to get right I think, but they did! It was really lovely - great flavours and perfectly cooked. |3 of us managed sweets - the chocolate mousse topped with boozy cherries, and cream was divine - a generous size and very rich. The buttermilk tart was smaller, but super tasty, and definitely enough after a large meal.|The menu is still changing and it will get bigger I am sure, there is also a Sunday lunch which everyone in the village is raving about! It is next on the...
Read moreThis place is just fantastic. We visit for lunch regularly and have had evenings meals 4 or 5 times in the last few months. The staff can’t do enough for you. Always welcoming and happy to help. The food is thoroughly wonderful. This evening for instance one of our party had the fish and chips - I’d not ordered this before and witnessed a giant piece of cod in golden batter surrounded by home made glassy crisp chips. Halfway through the orderer (well into his 70s) said it was up there with the best fish and chips he’s ever had. I had the burger (again, I had it last week as well!), perfectly cooked moist thin double patty in a perfectly soft yet textured brioche with glazed onions and pickled gherkins - every bite a dream. The dark chocolate mouse dessert - just wow. I could eat this all night. In previous weeks my wife and I have loved the folded flat bread sandwiches at lunch - such flavourful combinations and ingenuity, these sandwiches seriously wouldn’t be out of place at street food locations in any major city. If I had to find issues it would only be with the range of cask ales on - they had two great Robinson beers tonight and regularly. These are kept in great condition - though I’d love to see a few rotating guest casks on as well. Alas, I know not everyone...
