Im absolutely disgusted with the customer service! Firstly when we called to see if they were serving food the woman on the phone was extremely rude and put down the phone so we had to call back to confirm they were and until what time. When we arrived and ordered the food at the bar we were over charged it stated on the menu the steak was £13.95 and we was charged £18.95 also the mozzarella sticks were £5 on the menu but we were charged £6, when the food arrived it was cold and to my absolute disgust there was a pubic hair in the chicken with white wine sauce!

Also, the cheesy chips came without cheese! When we complained about the hair the gentleman was in denial saying he couldn’t see the hair but it was definitely placed on purpose as the bulb was visible so it was clearly freshly plucked!

When we changed the order to a steak it came but there was no peppercorn sauce and when asked if we could have some peppercorn sauce they said yes that’s £2.50. Given the service I was not happy to accept being charged for the sauce and the gentlemen said ‘you’re not having it then’ and took the food away! I had been driving for 3 hours, I was not in the mood for arguing, I was starving but at this point I was livid. I explained how angry I was and expressed that I couldn’t believe they were refusing to give me the peppercorn sauce for free after the disgusting service. They gave me my money back for my main meal and asked me to leave but when I said I couldn’t as I was caring for a young person they threatened to call the police! I’m laughing typing this because the service was ridiculously bad and if I don’t laugh I’ll cry.

Finally, as I was waiting for the YP and my colleague to finish their food I could hear the gentleman saying ‘I knew they would be trouble when they walked in’. Wow the absolute cheek of it! Never again, if you’re an out of towner don’t eat here as they will judge you on your accent before anything else.

And this is how honest I am, the food looked lovely. But they picked the wrong person to try and con.

I wish I could post the picture...

I don't enjoy leaving bad reviews, but I really can't write anything but a negative one. At the entrance, you're greeted by very stinky gents loos with the door open, complimented by numerous flies. This should probably have been a warning sign, but we'd been unable to get a table anywhere else at short notice on Friday night. The bar was sticky and generally pretty grubby. Anyway ...we decided to risk it and ordered food from the fairly basic menu. Our already limited confidence was shaken when the table next to us had to call the waitress back as their lasagne was still frozen! I ordered drinks in the meantime, all of which came in dirty glasses. The food arrived ...one child's sausage and mash was fine. Another child had some mozzarella sticks, which were cremated. I went rather optimistically for a stilton and mushroom bruschetta....it was half a baguette with fried mushrooms, microwaved to melt some stilton on top. Edible, but not enjoyable. We didn't risk pudding and left as soon as possible, and the experience was summed up by the minder like waitress standing behind me saying "Don't worry, I'll wait" sarcastically while rolling her eyes! The saving grace was that for 4 of us to eat, and our drinks, it only came to £32. I would...

August 2025: New team are trying really hard so we should give them some support.

The pub was full when we visited today (1/8/25), the car park was overflowing and every table in the garden was occupied. That’s how desperate the area is for a good pub. Hopefully this team will make a success of it.

The bar staff struggled to meet the demand, lots of customers but only one till, three servers behind a bar designed for no more than two.

The offering in general seemed quite good, menu is straightforward and reasonably priced, draught beers are cold and well kept. Wine by the glass is sadly poor and very new world, 11% abv Pinot Grigio isn’t a good option.

I’m looking forward to trying the food, the kitchen team seemed very enthusiastic and delivered some delicious cheese twists to the bar for general consumption on the house. The menu is simple and has some good options, hopefully that continues.

We’ll be back, we’ll enjoy it again and tell everyone we meet how lucky we are to have this pub properly run again.

I traveled to Chard for the night for work and took the family as they were all off on school holidays. It was recommended to us by my colleague and it did not disappoint!!! From the moment we arrived we had some banter with the staff and locals and sat in the beer garden with a pint while we looked at the menu. We were informed of the items not on the menu and offered some alternatives too. Soup of the day, fish of the day and such. The food was amazing!!! 4/5 of us had the fish of the day- cod- and the last had the burger. All super tasty and delicious. Service was great. They didn't have any hot sauce but informed me that it was something they'd take on board for future customers. They checked in with us to see if we were needing anything else and offered desserts when we'd done. All in all, a great evening and we highly recommend it to others!! Well worth a visit!!

Last Sunday we visited Ye Olde Poppe Inn New 🍽️ for a Sunday roast as a group of five. We booked via Facebook the week before and we were glad we did as every table was taken. We tried the different roast options including the vegetarian tart, and all the food arrived within 20 minutes, complete with shareable extras like cauliflower cheese. 🧀 They also catered for gluten and dairy sensitivities with no fuss. For the five of us, including drinks, the bill was £110 including tip. £22 each for a full roast and drinks is pretty damn good! Friendly service, hearty food, we will be back. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
