After a funeral nearby, a function room was booked. The pub is friendly and our party was well catered for. The food supplied was good quality and of sufficient quantity staff were nice Can't really rate the atmosphere after attending a funeral. It was a relaxing and comfortable place for family and friends to remember and celebrate the life of a loved one. As the crematorium is nearby, they are probably used to this kind of thing. The catering was a buffet of light snacks and various sandwiches, including vegetarian choices. This was followed by a large bowl of perfectly cooked chips and fried onion rings. At the bar, I bought myself a pint of cider to wash it all down. I only had the one. There appeared to be the usual pub pool table, but when I looked over, nobody was using it. I didn't see if there was a dart board. The pub is well placed on the main road through Portchester and has a large free car park. It is a short walk to the town centre and railway station which has direct trains to Portsmouth, Southampton and London. There is also a regular bus service, For train times, you need the Southwestern Railway app. For bus times, you need the First Buses app. Or website. Also nearby is the legendary Portchestr Castle, its a bit of a walk but worth it. Google it for opening times. It's been a while since I last visited the town other than for the funeral and wake, so I don't know what else is there. If and when that changes, I will update this post with any interesting information that I may find. I have since been back for a pint and a meal. The place wes busy, and noise levels quite high, the meal consisted of a vegetarian burger with chips and a couple of onion rings. It was priced at £6.00 which is cheap enough, however the chips were nasty, I ate them as I was hungry, they tasted like yesterday's leftovers reheated and it felt like I was chewing cardboard. The onion rings is were as near perfect as you can get, and the burger was OK. Although you could order food on the app, you could not order drinks. I had to go to the bar and be charger£9.70 for 2 pints after Abbotts, they are 1.99 a pint in witherspoon, so that didn't impress me. Most likely I will go to 'spoons next time. Sorry guys, you need to improve or you will lose customers. Being busy is not an excuse I know it was a Friday, but so do you and you should have enough...
Read moreWe visited this place for the first time, we wanted to watch boxing Fury vs Usyk. Firstly, I did not like that there was no sound on the TV, secondly, a situation that I cannot explain to myself even now. My friend booked a place in advance, no one warned us that at 9 o'clock the kitchen was no longer open, well, it happens. We asked the pub staff if we could order food delivery, we were not given a clear answer and one guy said “i will ask colleagues” and he did not ask, so my friend ordered food as she was hungry. Then the administrator came to us and said that we cannot bring our own food, we packed the food and hid it, after the administrator began to tell us to leave the place. To our questions, why, because we hid the food, admitted our guilt, said that we will not eat anymore and we can throw away food, we will just drink our drinks and watch boxing. The answer was "you must to leave". I started asking to show me the documents, the institution's rules, where it is written that we have to leave the place, all the employees answered "we don't owe you anything" and "we don't have prescribed rules." I'm sorry, but I'm a customer who comes to pub, who pays for drinks, who sits quietly and does not touch anyone, I have the right to see some document that says that i must be kicked off, I asked to call the police to deal with this, but administrators told me that we should leave the place because we were bringing food. There was a very long conflict, where I asked for documents, asked to call the police and we were simply kicked out, because they don't care what I want. Sorry, but this service is terrible, answer “we don’t care” and “we don’t need to show our rules” It is unacceptable , I am a foreigner, I might not understand something, so I asked to show me the documented rules and i hear that they don’t care. I work in hospitality and i must to tell people about our rules and show them our policy, in this one pub guys never heard about visitor rights. Then my friends back in half hour again without food, just wanted order coffee and stuff kicked them...
Read moreHi guys
Okay, now, I need to prefix this review by saying that it's my local, and I've been coming here for 10 years. In that time there has been a variety of menu, refit, staff and landlord changes, so this is a review of what it is like (circa October 2022), it could be considered a semi-biased opinion, however I've been the first to raise issues about food at times in the past so if anything I'm probably more stringent than some!
Like any chain food can be hit and miss depending on staffing, time of day and fill, however over the last 6 months I have to say the food has been faultless.
The staff are always spot on and friendly, Alex the Landlord is quality and the premises themselves are always clean. It has 2 sections, a pool, darts area and a more eatery side. All with lots of tvs for sports.
When your getting a steak and drink for under £15 you shouldn't really have high expectations (these days) however the quality has been fantastic and I've paid far more ( x3 easy) for worse in high end establishments, so that should say something in itself.
They take blue light and AA discount and to be honest I'm a regular and if I want a good meal, in a decent venue, with pleasant staff and at a good price then this is my default option.
As a footnote, good range of beers and they get all the big...
