Lets start with something positive. I have been coming to the Jolly Roger for about 12 years and have always loved the food and service, I've even recommended the place and raved about the food to other people. On this occasion, my latest, and last visit both the food and service were well below par. On the Sunday of our visit the pub was very quiet asside from a party of 14 booked who arrived about 30 minutes after we did. We ordered our food and enquired as to its whereabouts about 45 minutes later and were informed that it was on its way. We enquired again about 10 minutes later and we're told it was being plated up. It arrived about 10 minutes later. My pie and mash was what I can only describe as inedible. The pie was soggy and hardly warm on the inside. My wife's Sunday dinner was a lake of gravy with food swimming in it. My disabled mother in-laws was more of the same. The side of pigs in the blanket were best described as uncooked grey meat. My wife went to the counter to complain and was told someone would be out to see her but one of kitchen staff came out but went straight back in without speaking to her and other senior staff member was outside smoking. As much as we don’t like to complain, we tried but no one was available therefore i paid the £68 bill and left. So after an hours wait, and 4 plates of inedible food we left very disappointed. I have added photos to show the food. I'm not really interested in a reply as the standard of food and service can't be justified and no explanation will see me returning.

If google lets me give zero star, I will. Went to this pub on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm, ordered a starter (soup) and a burger and chips. We didn’t get our food until 3:15pm despite the small menu. Soup was lukewarm, chip was cold, burger was lukewarm, in fact the melted cheese was hard. Soup was served on a clearly used small chopping board. No apologies from the waiter about how long it took the food to arrive. Soup didn’t come with bread despite it is on the small menu. When asked the waiter, he didn’t know his menu and said he will ask. Came back few minutes later to say yes it comes with flat bread and will go and get it now. Waited for 10 mins, by the time my partner has already finished his burger and chips. Went out to the bar to ask for the flat bread, waitress said someone will bring it to me, I said I will wait. Waited for a few minutes, waitress asked her colleague if the flat bread is ready, her colleague said what bread? Flat Bread finally arrived, hard and cold like cardboard. Also found two short hair in the food . The couple sitting next to us has waited for over an hour to have their roast dinner. I live locally and want to support local businesses, but this would be the last time I visit this pub despite the nice view, not again.

Family reunion lunch today in the conservatory overlooking the harbour. This is such a great location and the pub feels clean and cool as well as relaxed and comfortable. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. It was quiet in there at lunch time today but -so it was extra nice to have lots of personal attention. I don’t expect we could expect so much when it’s busy. We all went for the cod and chips with mushy peas -cooked to order and very nice. I had blackberry Eton mess which is really good without any excessive sugar if you find normal Eton mess sickly. We thought the beer was good and there are lots of different drinks to choose from. The ladies loos were very well looked after and clean. There’s an easily accessible but private extra loo right by the conservatory for less mobile customers. All in all we couldn’t find anything to grumble about the opposite in fact. Also, In the evenings it’s a lovely place to sit and have a pint watching it grow dark over the harbour.

We came in for Fathers day lunch. Overpriced for what you get. The roast dinner had clearly been microwaved (minus the meat) before it was brought out, potatoes, parsnips and yorkshire pudding had gone very soggy and veg was wrinkly and had a skin on from how over cooked it was. We had the baked camembert with "warm breads and chutney" for a starter, we had to ask for the Chutney as it was missing from the cheese board that came out with pomegranate sprinkled over it and the "selection of warm breads" was a slice of standard toast and a pitta bread cut in 4. Certainly not what you'd expect for £12! The fruit in the Eton Mess was still frozen when served, when I mentioned it to the girl at the end, she said it was probably just from where the dessert was being kept cold, I disagree, it was definitely frozen. The cookie dough looked and tasted like a brownie, we even questioned whether it was actually the cookie dough. Sticky chicken wings were far from sticky. They were plain, deep fried wings with fridge temp BBQ sauce squirted on top. Considering the menu says "Sticky chicken wings with a BBQ dip" this was disappointing. "Kids" pizza was a 12" pizza cut in to 4 and chucked on top of each other on the plate. My drink was served to me in a chipped glass that caught my lip when I took a sip. Drink was swapped on request but staff didn't seem too fussed about the cut lip. Service was hit and miss. One of the girls was very attentive and did a great job, the other was consistently in a rush to clear plates from table before we'd all finished eating. I dont feel the food or drink was value for money. For 2 adults and 1 child we paid £92.50. Wouldn't have minded if the care and quality was there. Won't be going back to this pub for food unfortunately. That being said, it's a good pub for a quick drink...

Wow. Appalling service.

I booked a table on a Saturday because I knew it would likely be busy.

Arrived on time and approached the bar, said I had a booking for 7pm. The young man behind the bar huffed, turned to his colleague and asked her if she could "sort this out". She was in the middle of making a drink and said she was busy. He then rolled his eyes and stormed off. Came back with a clipboard and shouted "name?" At me across the bar. I gave him my name and he jerked his head in the direction of the dining area. I asked if we should follow and he jerked his head again while rolling his eyes. He took us to a table that had one chair (there were 3 of us) and we then stood there awkwardly until he brought some chairs. He then threw some menus down on the table and told us there was "quite a wait for food". I asked how long and he shrugged. I said are we talking hours here and he shrugged again and started to walk away.

The table next to us then asked why he was giving us menus when they had been told the kitchen was shut because it was backed up. Again, the guy shrugged, mumbled something about doing his job and walked off.

Needless to say, we left.

I get that staffing can be unpredictable and such. But all he needed to say to us at the bar was "I'm sorry, it's really busy here today and there's a long wait for food, do you still want to go ahead with your booking?" And we'd have left happily. But the obnoxious attitude and treating us like dirt was completely uncalled for. I get the job is stressful but there's no need to talk to people like that.

Goes without saying that I won't be booking again, and my guess is that neither will any of the other tables who also said they had been waiting...

A very disappointing Sunday roast compared to those I have had elsewhere locally - maybe the staff were having a bad day! Keeping things relatively brief: I ordered two roasts at the bar, the staff member then disappeared round the back, returned and asked me again what I would like to order! I repeated my order as read in the menu - two chicken roasts (having been informed that beef was no longer available) and two additional portions of cauliflower cheese. I also ordered drinks and paid for everything. After returning to my table, I was followed by staff member and advised that there was no cauliflower cheese left (having paid for it). When the meals arrived it was apparent that we had been served turkey!....the meal was warm at best, the Yorkshire puddings were soggy and the roast potatoes were very disappointing - hard inside and not crispy at all. We spoke to another staff member and were advised that the roasts of the day were, in fact beef, gammon or turkey - chicken is served for children only! On revisiting the menu, the layout does not explain this - no mention of roasts of the day in the menu or up on a board - the note regarding chicken or beef actually refers to the kids menu - very ambiguously written - this was agreed by staff. We were offered to have the meals heated up but instead, asked for some additional hot gravy to warm the meal. We accepted turkey in lieu of the expected chicken! The portion of seasonal veg for two was the size of what I would normally expect for one. We accepted a dessert each in lieu of the cauliflower cheeses - no complaints there but overall very disappointing and we bid a hasty exit...
