The service ruined the whole evening. Spend your money somewhere else. We left before deserts, as at that point we were all quite frustrated and wanted to be out of the building. We felt that as we were a smaller table, our experience was put second after the larger (older) groups, and saw the couple seated behind us recieving poor service too.
The menus given to the table implied that you can only order a tasting menu or a 3 course meal (for £68, not including drinks, this is what we decided to do ) This is not the case, as when we gave up and decided to leave early, the price was only £52 for 2 courses. This option should be made clear to customers from the outset.
We arrived ready to have a good time, and would have been understanding about any delay, if an apology was made, or any customer care had been shown. We weren't informed of any delay, or told of any shortage in staffing.
We arrived on time and were seated promptly. Our drinks were slow to arrive, but we weren't able to order food for a considerable amount of time as no one came to take out order. Our starters arrived approximately 45 mins after we arrived, and our main courses didn't arrive until 1 hour 50 after we arrived. Almost 2 hours is a ridiculous amount of time to wait.
There are big discrepancies between plate sizes- the lamb is really quite small compared to other plates that were served to our table.
Again, if any customer care had been shown, we might have...
Read moreOverall excellent experience. As a food critic way out of my jurisdiction, I am always trying to give constructive feedback. We did the tasting menu. the romesco sauce from the breadcourse was the star of the entire meal. Layers upon layers of flavors. The potato terrine was next. While perhaps relying too much on the smoky flavor, it was a delectable dish. The scallops course, which was a singular scallop, was the favorite at my table, cooked and crisped perfectly with a perfect sauce. Next was the ox cheek, which was good but could have used even more spice. Hallibut was next. Had a sour dough crust which I could have done without but which my wife loved. Important to note that my wife is not a seafood fan but her two favorite courses were the scallops and halibut. Lamp followed, which was probably the biggest disappointment. Meat was cooked perfectly but sauce was slightly off and the small lamp pie to share could have been done without. Dual dessert courses of dark chocolate and hazelnut and strawberry soufflé were good (and the soufflé bordering on great), except the strawberry sorbet was a little flat and lackluster.
Wine list was a little short and uninspiring, but did the job.
Overall very well done indeed.

Read moreThe is an old village pub, transformed into restaurant. It does not do pub grub! However, it does exceptional food at very reasonable prices. With Michelin starred restaurants I would have thought them to be quite pretentious places, the Dog and Gin Inn is not though. In keeping with its setting in rural Cumbria it is as traditional a dining experience as you can get in these parts and I think is all the better for it. The food is exceptional though and the service likewise! All of the dishes that we had were all very flavourful (starter, main and deserts) and when during my friends main he complained of the pork loin being a little to rare for his liking, it was taken away, returned by the chef, who apologised and explained that he had cooked it through, added to it, and asked if it was to my friends liking. Definitely somewhere to visit again, indeed, one of those places to eat those dishes you might not ordinarily pick, as here it will have been cooked in a way to produce a...
