This pub is a real missed opportunity for the owners.
On the plus side, it's a pub with a lively atmosphere in a central village location with ample parking and additional outside facilities. It's cozy, comfortable and serves food to eat in the bar area or restaurant area. The staff and locals were warm and friendly.
On the minus side, the accommodation area and room we stayed in was shabby, at best. Anything you would obviously touch during normal use was superficially clean, anything else was really dusty. The carpet was dirty, the paint was peeling off the ceiling, the bathroom had someone else's empty pill packet in it, the sink light didn't work and oh my God was it cold! Even with the heating left on it was cold.
Eating was a poor experience at both breakfast and in the evening. Staff could really use some training in both professional skills and in the concept of customer service. The breakfast was easily the worst I've eaten out in ages. The evening meal was a challenge as there was a power cut half way through so we only received wine and haloumi fingers as a starter. Sadly, the latter were well overcooked. Once the power cut started we were abandoned - no offer of even sandwiches, no complimentary offerings, no guidance and nothing could be bought as the tills and pumps were obvioulsy down. Weirdly, the Chinese takeaway 3 doors down was somehow magically able to continue cooking and I have to say it was simply brilliant! I really recommend it and will leave a separate review for them.
Come on The Lion - you can do way better than this! This is no where near a 4 star establishment standard and is...
Read moreWe were staying at The Lion as we had two long days at Waddesdon Manor. We arrived at 7pm and the room was clean and comfortable however at 10:30 pm music started playing below us, so loudly we could literally hear every word from both the music and those singing along. As it's near Christmas we checked the website to find out closing time which was 11:30. Despite wanting to sleep and that being impossible we let it go. However by ten to midnight we couldn't take it any longer and went downstairs to ask when it would end. We were greeted by the owner with hostility and she made no effort to apologise. Instead she smirked, turned the music down and as I walked away proceeded to say 'there's always one'. Had her attitude been better we would have put it down to our bad luck and Christmas festivities however the owners attitude was inexcusable.
The shower is a trickle and you would be better washing in the sink and the breakfast was anemic toast with rubbery scrambled eggs. Although my husband said the full...
Read moreI spent four delightful nights at The Lion while on a hunting trip. I can't say enough about the staff. They gave me a room right next to a secure exit door so I could leave at 5 am without disturbing anyone (the main doors are locked at that hour). I would return late in the morning, well past normal breakfast time, yet the chef was happy to prepare anything I wanted even though breakfast was technically finished. The food was good, the pub lively and friendly. It was great, after a long, cold day in the field, to pop back in for a quick shower and then down one flight of stairs for my nightly Guinness and a pleasant meal. By the second night, the bartenders knew me so well they'd start pouring my Guinness the minute they saw me. No, it is not a five-star elegant hotel. I'm very glad about that. Many places claim to be family owned, and The Lion is--but this is one of the few establishments making that claim that truly make you feel like part of the family. Hope to...
