I visited for a roast lunch on Saturday. The pub sits at a beautiful country road intersection, partially tucked behind an earthen bank. I forgot to find out how old the building is (I love old English pubs), but’s got the cosy, low-beamed ceilings and stone wall vibe that always appeals to me.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, it was a relatively quiet lunch so they had a little bit of a chat which you don’t typically get in city pubs. But the star of the day was the food. I had what I can only describe as gourmet Fish and Chips. Every component of the meal was above average (nice, non-oily batter, double or triple cooked chips, excellent tartare sauce and puréed mushy peas). I think it was the first time in my life I’ve ever seen F&C plated-up as though it was a competition entry, even having a sprig of what might have been watercress decorating the fish. We spoke to the manager who mentioned that they source the meat dishes from our local butcher, which is nice to hear.
There’s a nice outdoor seating area but for me the cosy interior is the drawcard.

Read moreFirst visit to The Shears Inn. Made a booking before hand and the lady who handled the call was courteous and efficient. We enjoyed a warm welcome and our drinks order was taken promptly. I was delighted to see that there was Guiness 0.0 alcohol free so no need for alcohol free lager. Excellent Chardonnay for my wife which she enjoyed. We both selected from the specials board and enjoyed an excellent monk fish Thai curry and a delicious salmon fillet. I enjoyed an excellent and authentic Eton Mess. Our dog was made perfectly welcome who we also took the time to advise we would be bringing during our booking. In summary we had a warm, courteous and efficient experience at The Shears Inn and plan a return visit soon. Having read other reviews it seems to me that often you receive greatest courtesy when you make the effort to bring...

Long story short we ended up walking out after numerous more awkward comments from said French accented barman. Sorry but this service is unacceptable and will never...
