After 4 attempts to book a table by phone, for my wifes birthday celebration meal, including leaving a message for a call back which wasn't returned. I decided to try one last time before giving up. On my last attempt I managed to get someone to pick up. So I booked a table for the following Saturday night in Barn 1. Upon arrival, we found that there was a wedding reception booked in Barn 1, and we were redirected to the "Retreat" next door, where we were told that we were eating in here instead. We ordered drinks and our main courses. However, around 20 minutes later we were told that there would be a further 20 minutes to half an hour for our food to arrive as it was stated that priority had been given to the wedding parties food. We were offered a complimentary drink for the inconvenience. Our main courses arrived. My wife had ordered the Vegan Chille, which looked as if it had been plated up previously and reheated. My wife's mother ordered the Salmon. The Salmon itself was fine, but it was supposed to be on a bed of vegetables, but instead was placed on top of a few new potatoes, surrounded by a red onion which had been poorly cut, left in large quarter size chunks, with a chunk of lemon on the side of the plate. I myself had the house 8 ounce burger. The burger and bun was fine along with the side of chips, but no other garnish provided. With all three mains the overall presentation was poor, and nothing like the glossy enticing presentation as illustrated on the Barn 1 restaurant website. As it was a birthday meal, we decided to order desserts. Again after a lengthy wait, they arrived. My wife's crumble along with my chocolate brownie was fine. However, my wife's mothers Sorbet arrived, a tiny single scoop in what could only be described a thimble sized ramekin dish with a dessert spoon to eat it with.
In summary, we had high expectations for our birthday dinner at Barn 1, having paid premium restaurant prices for an extremely disappointed experience.
There were only two other couples dinning at the time. From my observations they too endured the same lengthy wait for their food, as for the quality of it I cannot say.
I hope that this review will be taken in a positive light, with lessons learned so future dinning guests will not suffer the same. Regrettably we will not risk a return visit, and will unfortunately not be able to...
Read moreWe have just purchased a caravan on the adjacent park and spent all day sorting it out. We took a chance and went to Barn 1 to eat. Although we hadn't booked they were able to accommodate and how glad we were that they could. The evening menu is not extensive but once you taste your food you will understand why. The chef seems to understand how to prepare and cook the most amazing food, which even had my wife who is a classically trained chef, questioning the chef where he trained as she was convinced he must be too. All of the mains were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. We did not have starters before but will definately try these next time(already booked in next time we are near). The desserts are all fresh and not pre-made as a lot of restaurants do. If you ever find yourself in the area I would definately try and book a meal here. We are looking forward to trying the carvery next(review for...
Read moreThe 2 stars are for the afternoon tea we had, which was really lovely, although a shame there isn’t a selection of teas to choose from. The staff were also really nice, as our booking was cancelled twice due to the hot tub not working, we were given a free soft drink.
We went for the relax and retreat package and were thoroughly disappointed in the state of the changing rooms. The toilet was dirty, didn’t lock and the hairdryer wasn’t working. We were also not told to bring our own towels when we booked. The changing room was grotty and small, no private room to get changed in and could do with a lot of TLC. The “spa” which I wouldn’t call a spa, was not relaxing in the slightest, the hot tub had so many chemicals in it my eyes burnt and I had to leave. The pool was fine and the steam room was nice, but no where to sit and relax like...
