We had travelled half an hour on Friday evening especially for the set evening menu as advertised online (available Mon-Fri). We were seated and given both the a la Carte and set menus. We were nearly done with deciding what we wanted from the set menu only to have the menus snatched away moments later and told tonight was ‘steak night’ and the set menus weren’t valid. We were very disappointed as we didn’t want steak but decided to go with it (thank god we were vegetarians!) - the steak deal meant it came with a glass of wine but since we don’t drink we asked if we could swap it for something else (a dessert perhaps) especially since we were so disappointed by the lack of set menu and conscious we didn’t want to spend a fortune on the a la carte. The (manager?) laughed and said he’d throw in something else for free instead of the wine.
We waited over half an hour for the steaks (the restaurant was by no means busy) and my side order was wrong so they had to go back and get it right. The steaks tasted delicious and were perfectly cooked. My side of a tomato salad (instead of chips) tasted good but I would have expected a slightly better looking salad for the price.
We then asked the waitress if we could have the eton mess sundaes for dessert (instead of the wine - since they were of a similar price) and then the manager came back and exclaimed “I don’t know where you got the impression that you could have a dessert instead of the wine!” in a slightly ruder tone than he needed. He offered us a soft drink but we explained we were at the end of our meal so it was a little late. He said he couldn’t do the desserts since it would mess with stock levels but then quickly changed his mind and said he could.
The sundaes came out and I’m glad we weren’t paying the full £8.50 for them - a scoup of strawberry ice cream, some chantilly cream and maybe half a strawberry (the menu said strawberries- plural!).
Service not impressive, extremely slow (steaks are quick to cook!) and the manager should not be in the customer service industry - we really felt like we were a massive inconvenience to him and that he felt he was doing us a favour! At least the steaks were good.

Read moreA group of us went to the Queen’s Head for our annual get together I decided to select my meal from the a la carte menu, rather than the Festive menu. For my main course I decided on the Seared Flat Iron Steak with herb crusted Portobello mushroom, beersamic dressed watercress, peppercorn sauce and skin on fries £23.95. I couldn’t believe what I was served, the steak appeared to be ok, but not the largest I’d seen, the chips were in a steel cup and resembled KFC chips and the Portobello mushroom appeared to be a slice and not a whole mushroom. I hadn’t ordered the Peppercorn sauce as I don’t like it, however there was no alternative. There was no sign of the watercress, it transpired that they had run out. I queried the lack of food and was told that was the normal serving so I asked for an additional portion of Cauliflower Cheese to go with it and bolster up the meal. I started to eat the meal, it was lukewarm. I pointed this out to the waitress, who apologised and called her supervisor, my meal was replaced as it was well below standard. The new meal was totally different, well cooked, had a complete mushroom, still with KFC chips, they used Rocket to replace the Watercress and it was hot. They also brought out the cauliflower cheese. So although the first plate was absolutely terrible, they did redeem themselves, however they also charged me full price. What worries me though is that if I hadn’t complained about my meal being cold, they would of been quite happy to leave me with the original below standard serving and the additional side dish. I have attached a photo of my original plate, the carrot was given to me by a friend who felt sorry for me. Is that...
