Had a room booked 3 months ago and received very little communication even after ringing several times, still no communication. When we arrived we had a meal to celebrate a birthday. Bar staff were nice, food nothing to write home about. Tried to sort out the room as it was still unclear which room we were in. The owners wife told us we couldn’t have the room we originally booked and that we would have to take the another room on the front of the hotel (road side) then we were told now that room wasn’t available, which we weren’t happy about and because of being changed twice we were offered the room for free. But then the owner changed his mind and instead of having the balls to come and tell us himself, after tearing a strip off his wife for all to see outside, left it to his wife who was clearly incapable of dealing with the situation and were told we could not stay. We asked to speak to someone else to try and sort this and chef thought he would get involved, he was rude and didn’t listen to our issues and then finally the owner come along was terribly rude by talking over us, denied the poor communication and told us to leave. This was supposed to be a surprise meal and overnight stay that was booked over 3 months ago. I wouldn’t advise anyone spending anytime here, unless of course you like a Fawlty...

Stayed the 1 evening, will not stay again, definitely not worth the cost even with the good cooked breakfast. We had stayed here for a couple of nights 3 years ago, but place is now tired and not particularly clean. Although bedding was perfect, it was the dust on and behind the bedside table (moved for socket and had to get husband to kill spiders and get rid of cobwebs). Dust and dirt on skirting, ceiling etc. The 3 windows could do with far better curtains the daylight woke us far far earlier than we would have liked 4.30am! We had lunch in the bar, on arrival Saturday but my sautéed mushrooms on half a ciabatta was just swimming in oil, the bread was sodden and as there was a soup of it in the bowl I couldn't even squeeze the fat out of the bread, after asking I did receive another half of ciabatta so I could at least eat the mushrooms with something, this, which i had for my meal, cost me £7.75 - not worth it and would definitely not recommend, I did comment at the time and when checking out. For that price I would expect a variety of mushrooms and the taste and enjoyment of sautéed food but minus the oil soup. Altogether, although we had a good breakfast we did not feel we received...

Well what delight full management, or mis management as it turns out!||Thank you so much for the abusive treatment of my family. A room was booked back in March as a surprise for my sisters 50th birthday. This was room 1 confirmed by the reception in person, after several phone messages being left last week 16/7/2025 requesting a call back to confirm everything was OK. No call back happened so my parents drove over and were told that someone else had booked room 1 even though they had written confirmation that it was booked for my sister! Eventually they offered room 3 and this was confirmed via a phone call the next day. After having a mediocre meal on 18/07/2025 we went to get the key for room 3 only to be informed that the had let the room to someone else! And that it was now room 4! This was debated with a male who we assumed was the manager/owner who's attitude towards my parents was horrible and very abusive and then he turned his attention to my sister and managed to totally ruin what was meant to be a surprise stay at the pub!||We left the premises feeling upset and scared due to the behaviour of the management.||||Anyone planning to stop there please...

Don't order the fish & chips! We walked down to the Travellers Rest from the nearby Hardhurst Farm campsite (which I highly recommend). We've been to this pub numerous times before and always been happy with the food. However the menu now seems to be very limited so we chose two portions of "Deep Fried Battered Fish" at £13.75 each in the absence of anything interesting. The bar service was very pleasant and we sat with our drinks awaiting our food. Unfortunately what we were presented with was not so pleasant. The small fish was completely devoid of taste. I strongly suspect it was a "Basa" fillet (Pangasius catfish I believe) which is sold as the cheapo alternative to Cod in most supermarkets. The chips were at least hand-cut but nothing special, and the mushy peas, presented in a small dish, were more akin to pea soup - extremely watery with a few peas in the bottom. When the plates were being collected we were asked if we enjoyed our meal. "Decidedly average" was my wife's comment. I think that was rather generous.

Nice looking place from outside but a little dated inside. Menu is pretty limited so you’d hope they’d nail what’s on there. However, while edible, the food was very bland and uninspiring. I had chips with a bacon and brie sandwich. The chips were really basic par boiled and undercooked. Bacon was undercooked and cheap looking. It would have been nice to have it served with some chutney to elevate it above something you might get served at a prison Christmas brunch. Thankfully the bread was ciabatta which was a nice touch but it wasn’t lightly toasted as you might expect. Beer selection was limited though nice to see local Bradfield Belgian Blue available. Service was good so not going to be too harsh with the rating but if you can’t serve a decent chip then questions need to be asked about life choices etc. This is/was Jessica Ennis’s local but this is definitely not the food of champions.

The room ( no 2, twin) very clean, spacious. The bathroom again clean, all one would need. My only minor gripe would be in the shower there is no tray for one's shower gels etc. The staff were young ( nothing wrong with that, they have to start somewhere and they're local) were friendly and pleasant. I've lived and worked in hospitality in the area in the past, the location is excellent ( on the main route out of Castleton towards Sheffield, about 3 miles away)) without paying Castleton prices, very good value for money. It's a dog friendly venue. The public areas are also clean, spacious modern. Large car park and grounds. To add to this a mention about a member of staff Samuel, seems to be there morning noon and night. Sound bloke, plus he helped me out with checking out ( turned out my pin number was locked 🤦 Will certainly return.
