Liked: This was our first stay at the Anvil campsite. Karl, Kath and the team were brilliant hosts - they were all lovely people and their helpfulness and service were first class.
The pub was great. We enjoyed the food, both at the pub and as takeaway to eat back at our van. Their vegetarian and plant-based options were good, it was nice to see a menu and not feel like the non-meat options were an afterthought. They had top live music on the Saturday night, the pub was packed and I even got chatting to locals from the village and fellow campers, who all enthused about the pub and entertainment.
The pub is accessible via the entrance to the rear (closest to the car park and campsite) flat inside, with a spacious disabled toilet just inside the that entrance. Although there isnât a toilet block on the campsite, you can use the loos whenever the pub is open. It was clear the team are mindful of disabilities and access and you donât get that everywhere, so very refreshing.
As a self-propelling wheelchair user, the campsite was fine. There is a gravel car park between the pub and the campsite, and I was able to get across it both on my own and with a push. The entrance to the campsite slopes down onto the grass, not too difficult if you have help or are used to getting about navigating slightly challenging terrain. The pitches are on flat grass - pitches 5, 6, and 7 are closest to the campsite entrance and we were on 5, when we were there we saw that this was among the better pitches for wheelchairs and were pleased. The other pitches are also on flat grass but slightly further back. Pitch 7 wouldâve been the optimum, but then youâre closest to the car park and as we have a little dog that wouldâve meant considering if being closest to the car park wouldâve been right for him.
Dogs arenât permitted in the pub. This was made clear upon booking and we didnât mind, and weighing all things up it didnât detract from our experience.
Thank you so much for being brilliant, Anvil team. What a gem of a find, and we will see you...
Read moreLiked: Motorhomes and Caravans only. Really good value. Small level, well kept, quiet site bordered by trees, hedges and high fence. Lots of bird life to watch. Close to the Anvil pub but far away enough not to feel overlooked / on show. The proprietors and other workers were lovely and helpful. Actually liked the system for the electric hook up, with each pitch having hook up available, you buy a pre loaded card from the pub and at the end of the stay the meter is read and the card deposit cost and any cost of unused electricity is refunded. WiFi worked but not always that strong (good for basic reading emails etc), not a problem for us as we used our phones as mobile hot spots when we had to. Really good to have a pub so close! Handy base for exploring North Norfolk. Note the pub is closed on Mondays, so if arriving / leaving on a Monday, you would need to contact them in advance to arrange booking in, returning the electricity card etc. Also at any time (especially Sunday lunch) book a table for food in advance if that's to be an important part of your stay.
Disliked: Not much to dislike. But if you have children with you, there would not be room for bicycles, ball games etc unless there were, at most, only a couple of other units...
Read moreVisited the pub at 18:30 on a Tuesday and although it wasn't full straight away it became apparent the staff seemed stressed and not able to really cope. We sat at a table outside after speaking with who I believe to be the owner/manager. After 10 minutes no one appeared to take our order and so I went inside to the bar where I ordered the steak, chicken burger and a soup along with 3 drinks.
I took the drinks and our cutlery back to the table (instead of the staff doing it) and also has to ask for condiments. The food didn't take to long to be brought out to us however the chicken was under cooked and had to be sent back for another one. The replacement chicken burger was okay but in the end just tastes of the oil it has been deep fried in! The steak (asked for medium cooked) was medium to well but more disappointing it was mostly very chewy fat and gristle. ÂŁ19 for this steak and ÂŁ15 for chicken burger is massively over priced. Upon paying when leaving I noticed a sign in the bar advertising for a full time or part time chef! If only I had seen that before ordering!! Not a...
