It is with a heavy heart that I have to write a bad review, but The lord Nelson at Burnham Thorpe deserves it more than anywhere I have ever eaten in my life. The starter of the beef short rib, was pretty good, but as far as my food went, that was where it ended. I ordered the steak, and for £28 I expected it to be something to look forward to. I asked for rare, the chef, who is clearly inexperienced at cooking meat, must have used an almost cold pan. The fat hadn't seen any heat so it was raw, and the meat itself was pale grey. I asked for another one, and when attempt number two came back, the chef had put the same piece of steak back in a Luke warm pan, and cooked until it was completely over done (but still hadn't shown any heat to the fat). The third attempt, was worse then the first, and clearly cooked in a pan with no heat once more. My partners pie was burnt, and the mash was lumpy, but at least her food was passably edible. For the price the food costs here, you would expect decent food. The only saving grace of our evening, was the front of house staff, who were very apologetic, gave me a free espresso Martini (which was incredibly good) and gave us free desserts. My advice to anyone reading this is to avoid it at all costs. There are many amazing places to eat in the area, the Chequers at Thornham does truly amazing steak, and is far more deserving of your money than The lord Nelson.

I visited The Lord Nelson public house 'again '3rd November 2025'after 3 years' What a difference ' Well!! If you what character'!!! good food'!!! good selection of beers' !!! Good selection of wines The menu is really good all freshly made on the premises ' Good parking. outside seating as well ! Dogs are truly welcome with a selection of dog biscuits ' The restaurant is bright nicely decorated! There is a new Landlord called Greg' Who took over The pub' April of this year. and is very charismatic ' and cares for this place with passion. He has so many exciting plans 'and ideas for this famous local Which originally was called The Plough but renamed after Nelson' in 17th century 'in tribute to his battle of the nile 1798' If you are looking for a unique eating/public house ' Look no further . Lord Nelson used to host dinner parties ect for the locals' Nelson was born in the village 'His father Edmond' was the Rector of All Saints Church for 40 years' and resides in the church grounds' along side some of Nelsons siblings. Wonderful Village'šŸ‘ Walk In the steps of Nelson' and enjoy having a drink and something to eat in his local.

Good open space. Dog friendly. So good place if other places have no room or you have a dog. Unfortunately, overall not great an experience. Staff saw us waiting to be seated and just walked around us. I needed to ask if we just should grab a table. Not terrible but could improve. Had the tempura oysters and calamari. Oysters were decent. Good presentation. The calamari looked and felt like onion rings. Not great but some people may prefer it this way. Than the chowder. A piece of fish tasted like it was off. The other fish pieces were fine. The baby potatoes were extremely undercooked. The waitress said she’d feed it back when we flagged it - you’d expect more when a product is sub-standard. Burger patty lacked seasoning but the relish compensated. Water available for the dogs along with little bone treats that my dog usually sticks her nose up at but loved here. Not terrible but enough bad points on this occasion to warrant quite a negative review I’m afraid.

Avoid This Restaurant - Unacceptable Service and Inedible Food

I recently dined at The Lord Nelson in King's Lynn, and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve ever had. What was meant to be a pleasant family meal turned into a frustrating ordeal that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

We arrived for our meal with high expectations, but things quickly went downhill. After receiving our starters at 6:30 PM, we were left waiting endlessly for our main courses. By 7:45 PM, there was still no sign of our meals. We had specifically requested that my niece’s dinner be served with the starters, as it was past her dinner time, but this request was blatantly ignored. After asking again, her meal finally arrived at 7:50 PM, more than an hour after we first sat down.

At this point, we were desperate for some kind of resolution and asked the waiter for an update on our main courses. His response was simply, ā€œlet me just check,ā€ a phrase we had already heard several times without any real action. The lack of communication and urgency was shocking.

To make matters worse, when my sister-in-law started cutting up my niece’s fish fingers, she discovered they were frozen solid on the inside. This is beyond unacceptable. It doesn’t take a qualified chef to properly cook something as basic as fish fingers, and the fact that this was overlooked is astonishing. Despite the manager offering apologies, none of the chefs were willing to take responsibility for serving undercooked food to a child.

In summary, this restaurant is to be avoided at all costs. The service was atrocious, and the food was not only delayed but also inedible and put my 2 year old niece at risk of a serious illness. It's clear that the staff are not equipped to handle even the most basic requests. We left the restaurant incredibly disappointed, and we will certainly not be returning.

I will be reporting this incident to the environmental health team at the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk and the Food Standards Agency to ensure the restaurant is held accountable and that such incidents don’t occur...

šŸ™„ fish & chips mushy peas, nineteen pounds! Fish size of a pilchard out of a tin with approx 1 inch soft batter with very little white fish Mushy peas served semi cold, chips ok but an aftertaste of cooking oil! 🤦On the plus side...very clean, lovely very clean toilets. A lovely lady serving and helpful young man in the bar. But they need to decide where they are going as my family are in the catering trade with restaurants hotels etc and with hand on heart its the worst meal i have ever eaten a basic transport cafe would put it to shame! Whoever is managing this former great establishment needs a serious word with his or her self. We eat in lots of Norfolk's pubs etc in The Hoste in burnham, dabbling Duck at gt. massingham etc etc throughout norfolk and the uk and no. . i get NO pleasure writing such a poor review but it is truthful and the management needs it brought to their attention & to act upon it or lose whot business they have, happy customers are Repeat customers. Former vist in 2024 two ladies managing this establishment and the food, service etc was superb so when visiting the area again we decided to return for lunch, a big mistake to be perfectly honest..i cannot belive how poor the fish & chips mushy peas where, my pride would not allow me to serve up such dross at nineteen pounds per person! Does the management not check out local public houses restaurant's etc to see whot quality they offer? No we did not return because of the connection to Lord nelson as much as we respect and admire his achievements for the navy, we returned for the previous good food. A lovely building, car park, clean, staff that we met where pleasant ..criticism is meant as constructive as i dont want to see another uk public house close due to...
