Really didn't enjoy my experience here at bulls head pub! After finally been just me and my partner alone without the dogs and kids after a busy Christmas we was excited to try the bullshead pub after passing by this residence often when heading for a walk at blackmoorfoot res. So to start we was seated in an area on our own for the first 5 mins only to have two family's come in to the area where they was with a couple of wet dogs from their walks so we asked if we could maybe move to somewhere dog free and be able to relax with our meal which they sorted for us and we was thankful for that. The residence had the heating on but there was terrible Draft from somewhere and we couldn't take our coats off without been uncomfortable so we kept them on (we also noticed most other diners with jumpers or coats on too) Our mains came and I was slightly underwhelmed at the my plate of mostly salad and Coleslaw, my burger meat was thin and was a bit lost on the big bread bun and I had 10 hefty chips but would have liked more. Overall I enjoyed the taste but I would have liked more food. My partner enjoyed her cajun chicken skewers but didn't think there was much on the plater either and she would have like some more chicken meat, she said her chips were a bit hard and burnt. Desserts were horrendous! I had a pistachio cheesecake with ice cream and I have never tasted anything more strange in my life, the cheesecake had no biscuit base and was all just a foam consistency which tasted nothing like pistachios and only of an overpowering taste of marzipan. It was just a plate of mush with no crunch and looked as undesirable as it tasted. My partners chocolate fudge cake and custard was a bland sponge with an over watery custard! Service: The food here isn't the cheapest but the service was akin to a low grade cheap restaurant! The waitress we had was young and shy and didn't seem like she was in the right job, she didn't once say to us to enjoy our meal and we didn't get asked once if everything was ok with our meals whilst or after eating them. I put my cheesecake to the end of the table after having one bite from it and it was left there until the waitress cleared our tables 15 minutes later.. After passing by our table and seeing I hadn't eaten it on at least 6 occasions to tend with others, She then eventually asked if we had done but didn't asked if we enjoyed it or why I didn't eat it, so I said to her I didn't like my dessert that's why I haven't eaten it and she said sorry and then just took the food away. We was then left sat there for 10 minutes while the waitress tended to other customers not knowing wether the bill was coming to our table or if we had to go to the bar. We eventually got up and went to the bar to pay. We will not be returning here as the food didn't match the prices and the hospitality was very under par. We felt like we wasted the very rare time we got to ourselves.

I drive past this place everyday to go to work never actually been in until now and I’ve lived here for a while Food was miles better than i expected for pub food can not fault it we had salmon. Menu’s lack information, not sure what the Yorkshire pudding was doing on my plate but kinda worked i guess When it comes to drinks we asked for Coke each and got Pepsi Max which tasted like Rola Cola Chairs where wobbly had to switch chairs to find a more sturdier one I’m not going to let that ruin my experience we had a nice short stay. Classic Yorkshire pub, proper warm and cozy environment very friendly staff, Chefs know how to cook not microwave bandits food tasted fresh and nice presentation, pictures don’t do it justice. Never went upstairs will explore there next time Huge car park opposite the building on other side of the road no problem there Prices are alright £30 it cost us for 2 main dishes and 2 drinks Would recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Visited The Bulls Head at Blackmoorfoot and ordered the pan-seared duck, expecting it to be served pink as is typical with this dish. Instead, I was served something closer to a tough old boot—overcooked, dry, and lacking flavour. When I politely questioned it, the owner explained they “can’t do rare in the UK”—which I understand from a food safety perspective—but I wasn’t offered a replacement, refund, or even an apology. Instead, my half-eaten plate was reassembled and returned to me as if that resolved anything. The dismissive attitude and lack of basic hospitality made it painfully clear why the place was nearly empty. Disappointing food, worse service—won’t be returning.

I visited The Bulls Head expecting a traditional pub experience, but what I found was something far more impressive. From the moment I arrived, the staff set the tone — attentive, approachable, and genuinely interested in their guests.

To see if my experience was typical, I spoke with other diners and regulars. The pattern was clear: people praised the consistency, the generous portions, and the atmosphere that manages to feel lively without ever becoming overwhelming. One couple told me they travel out of their way every week just to eat here, while another said it had become their go-to spot for family gatherings.

The food lived up to every word of praise. Hearty, carefully prepared dishes served without fuss but with a level of flavour that made it clear quality ingredients are at the core of the kitchen. Service was smooth even at peak hours, and nothing felt rushed or overlooked.

The Bulls Head doesn’t rely on gimmicks or flashy reinventions. It succeeds because it delivers what people truly want: good food, good service, and a sense of belonging. My investigation only confirmed what the regulars already know — this is a pub that gets it right,...

Below is my five star review from previous visits. Haven’t been for about 18 months and cannot believe it was same place. Last nights visit was overpriced badly cooked food, one member of staff trying to serve drinks, take food orders, serve food and clear tables. What’s changed for it to go so drastically down hill? Chicken skewers (not on a two 4 one night, we’re tiny bits of burnt dry chicken, whilst the pork bites which should be crackling were 6 pieces of cold undercooked blubber. All with a long wait and terrible service.

Here is my review from a few years ago. I see from others it has sadly gone down hill. Very little GF and LI choices, no heating on and a miserable experience, after we paid nobody even bothered to say either thank you of goodbye.

Been for lunch twice now. First time a l carte, second time Thursday special hanging skewers.

On both occasions the quality of the food and wine was excellent and matched the great service.

You serve the best GF bread I have ever tasted. Nothing was too much trouble re my lactose...
