I visited yesterday with friends for food and drinks and was really disappointed. Despite ordering food to be Gluten Free I was served gluten containing food. I queried this with the waitress as soon as it was served, she said it was GF but would check. Came back to tell me it was GF and so safe for me to eat. I still wasn’t convinced and so chose to not eat the food. I’m glad I did, as the waitress then came back again to say the food I’d been served wasn’t gluten free.

I was then offered for my plate of food to be remade - which I accepted. The waitress then came back for a fourth time and said that there would be a long wait for the replacement food because the kitchen was too busy. At this point our food (sandwiches and chips) had taken 45 minutes to arrive anyway and we didn’t have the luxury of time to wait longer. I asked to speak to the manager and requested to be refunded for the food we had been charged for.

The waitress went to seek the manager - but then came to tell us he was busy pulling pints and we would have to come in to talk to him once we were finished with our meals, which was disappointing.

We had paid by card for the food and drinks, but on walking in we found the manager ready with cash to reimburse us £10 for the cost of the meal as if it were a quick fix. He then told us that we could have had the food made again - to which we had to say we had been told there would be a wait. The manager didn’t agree with this and said he would have to speak to the staff. Although an apology was given, I don’t feel the seriousness of being served food that is unsafe for me to eat was being understood let alone the poor service we’d had. For example, had the manager delegated pulling pints perhaps there would have been a better outcome and understanding between us all.

From my experience, I would say that those who visit with intolerances or allergies to be very careful.

I would also say that the facilities here are incredibly worn and tired which is a shame given all the work that went in to updating the dining and bar area over...

Was informed when we arrived that we would be only allowed an hour for a meal as they had a reservation then. So I glanced at the Vegetarian page ( as I've been a vegetarian for 35 years now) .. The Halloumi caught my eye, so thought I'd order that. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to take an order, I actually asked one of their staff if we could place our choice as we only had 40 minutes left at the table. My husband ordered Sunday roast and I ordered Halloumi burger ( in my haste to order quickly, it was actually Halloumi bake. We then waited a further 20 mins with no sign of our order arriving, so my husband this time asked one of the waitresses if it would be much longer as we would not have time to eat it.. Eventually our food arrived, I took one bite out off the bread and felt physically sick.. It was Chicken! We spoke to a waitress ( who I am guessing was the manager?) to complain about my order, she said that the order was put down as a Chicken burger?? No, I've not eaten meat for years.. I said that I'd read it as burger by mistake ( as we were told we didn't have much time to dine) . But I also said that ' Halloumi sounds Nothing like Chicken 🤔.. We were informed that the price of my meal would be removed from our bill. Do you not think that the person taking our order would not have told me that they do not do an Halloumi burger??? and questioned my order.. If I'd have asked for an Chicken bake.. Would I then have got an Halloumi Burger? Doesn't make sense really. I still feel physically sick. Thus ended up with no lunch at all. The decor was nice and before our food arrived we were talking about bringing my mother in law for lunch next week for her birthday.. But I'm afraid that won't be happening.

Very...

We were staying in Holmfirth, and, looked at top places to eat..this was one of them. The pub itself was beautiful. Our table was a little too close to the next,I could physically touch the person on the next table. When seated,we were told, the chefs on his own tonight, so,it'll be 15 minutes delay,we were fine with that. 15 minutes later,we got menus,10 minutes after, our drink order was taken. 15 more minutes, our order. My sisters had the rarebit..they said, was nice, just a bit dry,I had soup, this could have been amazing, it was very under seasoned. Our mains came,my sisters had the steak deal..2x8oz sirloins, with a bottle of wine. No steak knifes were offered. I ordered an ale pie, with a suet n thyme(?)top, with, mash and garden peas. I got mushy,I called the young girl over, explained, she fetched me garden. At 1st glance(was dark)my pie didn't seem "right" I put my fork into the crust, for the 1st bite, immediately said, this doesn't work, it's far too heavy. I then proceeded to take my lid off,the suet was raw underneath. I called the guy over, said, showed it him..said,I didn't want another lid cooking,to which he replied "thankyou"(?) When our bill came,£108,we questioned as to why we were paying for the pie(I left most of it,as,the suet had made me feel queasy),we said,we wasn't happy doing so,to which, the young girl said,"yea, sorry!" I'm a qualified chef, have been 40 years,if that'd happened in MY kitchen, I'd have told the staff, not to charge for the pie. It's such a pity, because, the pub is beautiful, a lovely location, just sad, that there was no customer service skills, and we were having pudding too, but, decided against it. We've emailed the manager,but,3 days later, nothing.

A great room - stayed in the Peacock room with its own separate lounge for 2 nights over Easter. Great meal on the Sunday evening and really good breakfasts. Had a great sleep as a lovely comfortable bed. A couple of disappointing areas. We were ignored initially by the person who appeared to be in charge when we walked in to check in. Very off putting and not a good first impression. One of his colleagues realised we had been ignored and was really helpful and welcoming- taking us straight to our room. Also, very frustrated to have to wait 45 minutes for our breakfast. We queried the delay and the fact that another table who came in after us were served before us and were told that it was because we had ordered poached eggs and they were having scrambled. Not sure this makes sense and feel they should serve customers in the order they arrive for a breakfast as much as possible, especially as we’d had to wait so long. A further frustration was that there was no food available on the Bank Holiday Monday Evening. Can understand why they don’t normally serve food on a Monday as it’s probably very quiet normally on a Monday but think it’s a mistake on a Bank Holiday when it will be much busier with more people staying over than normal and the bar was very busy. We were told that its their policy to give the kitchen team one day off a week. Can understand this, but running a hospitality business does require additional commitment and do feel they should serve food on Bank Holidays. Thank goodness for Just Eat, but really shouldn’t have been necessary.

Tucked away in a charming little village just off the main road, The Pickled Pheasant is a quintessentially British eatery that offers not only a warm welcome but also a truly memorable experience. The journey there was half the joy – winding over a scenic hill reminiscent of classic England WRC rally routes, with breathtaking views that set the tone perfectly. Upon arrival, we found a convenient and tidy car park just across the road. The building itself is wonderfully traditional, brimming with character and charm. Inside, the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with a distinctly English feel that made us feel right at home. Service was absolutely top-notch – friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. Every member of staff was polite and accommodating, making our group of eight feel very well looked after. It’s also worth noting that the venue appeared to be pet-friendly, with several locals enjoying their meals alongside their furry companions. We arrived in time for breakfast, which is served until noon – a lovely touch for those who enjoy a leisurely start to the day. We all opted for the classic Full English breakfast with sunny side up eggs, and it did not disappoint. The food arrived promptly, was piping hot, and every element of the dish was cooked to perfection. From the sausages to the mushrooms, everything was flavourful and satisfying. In short, The Pickled Pheasant is a delightful find – a place that combines traditional British hospitality with quality food and a picturesque setting. Highly recommended, 100%.
